Description
The Tollgate Brewery story began in 2005 on the old Woodville site of Brunt, Bucknall & Co, known as the Wooden Box Brewery, the first brewery to be established in the Burton area in 1832. Woodville was formerly Wooden Box, named after the famous toll booth on the road between Ashby de la Zouch and Burton-upon-Trent. The area around the Woodville roundabout (the modern equivalent of the toll booth) is still known as ‘Tollgate’ from which our brewery takes its name.
In 2012 Tollgate Brewery relocated to the National Trust Calke Abbey Estate due to a strong desire from the team at Calke Abbey and the National Trust to bring brewing back to the Estate. In January 2016 a change of ownership brought together the current brewery team. Tollgate Brewery currently occupies one of the National Trust’s farm buildings built in the nineteenth century. We’re a 6-barrel brewery using traditional brewing techniques that would be recognisable to those early brewers in the 1800’s.

Cask at Tap at No 76, Ashby-de-la-Zouch - Nearly black with reddish hue, cream head. Chocolate notes come through in nose and taste, not getting much in the way of cherry, but still nice enough.

Keg at Tap at 76, Ashby-de-la-Zouch - Clear golden body, small head. Malty start, grassy herbiness to the taste, bland aroma, but syrupy mouthfeel makes it well-rounded.

Large foamy white head on an unclear finely carbonated amber coloured body. Nicely balanced aroma. Medium bodied, soft & foamy over the tongue with a cloying back. Orange, tobacco, peach & caramel tastes with a bitter pine finish. Good drinker.

Handpull cask at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Light to mid-broen with a slightly reddish hue and an off-white head. Clear. Cloying aroma of toffee and oak. Sweet taste - far too sweet for this type of bitter. Some toffee and berry. Slight body, soft carbonation. This one doesn't work quite so well for me.

Handpull cask at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Dark, muddy gold with a tiny film of white head. Some citrus notes - pomelo, lemon balm - with a fresh grassy character. Taste is sweet with a waxy citrus note and slight spice. Bitterness closer to the finish. Actually quite intensely bitter without becoming astringent or otherwise imbalance. Interesting and simple. Good beer to start the evening with!

Foamy white head on hazy pale golden coloured body. Minimal citrus & light malt aroma. Medium bodied, smooth creamy & tingly on the back with a cloying aft. Zesty citrus, pithy, grapefruit, pine & yeast tastes with a tangy finish. Nice EIPA.
