Exmoor Ales – brewing quality cask and bottled ales from the edge of Exmoor National Park since 1979

Brewery suffered financial problems and in April 2025 were bought by Hogs Back. Brewing moved to Hogs Back until a move to the former Cotleigh Brewery site in September 2025.

[Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell.] Copper coloured with a thin cream head; sweet fruit aroma; fruity flavour with lots of sourish plums and chewy caramel malts; dry, biscuity, finish. Very pleasant.

Cask, third pint glass at JDW real ale festival at Standing Order in Edinburgh. Bubbly surface over an amber coloured body. Floral and fruity aroma. Rounded flavour of fruity hops leading to a modest bitter ending. Dry and smooth in the mouth [11.11.2008].

Cask-conditioned at the Portcullis, Bristol 11/12/08. Deep amber in colour with next to no head. Fruity malt aroma with a hint of chocolate. Flavour was sweetish, with plenty of biscuit malt, some red fruit and a short, dry finish. Good.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol. Amber with a decent white head. Aroma of hay, caramel and summer fruit. easy drinking, with some sweet malt flavours leading to a lingering bitter finish. Good stuff.

Cask (gravity) @ Great British Beer Festival, GBBF 2008, Earls Court, London, England SW5.Clear light to medium orange color with a small to average, virtually none head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, toffee, buttery notes. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter with a average duration. Bitternes is malt acrid. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. (070808)

Cask (handpump) @ Great British Beer Festival, GBBF 2008, Earls Court, London, England SW5.Clear light to medium amber orange color with a small to average, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, nutty - light nut’s, butter notes. Flavor is moderate sweet and light light bitter with a average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. (070808)

500ml bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Deep ruby red with a thick tan head; sour fruit aroma with cherry and plum; thick and oily in the mouth with stewed plums and milk chocolate flavours; then a dry lightly roasted finish.
