Description
It’s too easy to let life become predictable and settle for the ordinary. Luckily though, Orchard Pig is no ordinary cider. It all began in a Somerset shed, surrounded by the best West Country apple trees and free roaming Old Spot pigs. But, whilst every orchard has apples, not every orchard has Old Spot pigs. We believe our free-spirited attitude is the magic ingredient which makes every pint of Orchard Pig taste so refreshingly different to all the rest. Not your average apples, not your average pig. Orchard Pig. It’s a rare breed.

Cask at the Red Squirrel taproom, Amersham, 09/07/16. Light haze on a pale yellow to orange pour with little in the way of a head. Nose is light ginger, straw, apple skins, faint spice, grain. Taste comprises apple peel, light smoke, faint chilli, grass, ginger, mango chutney. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, drying close. Ok novelty kind of a cider, fine in small doses but couldn’t take a lot on board.

On tap at the Crown & Trumpet, Broadway. Slightly hazy straw colour. Marmalade surprisingly evident in both the whiff and the taste. It tends more towards the sweet commercial thin shred stuff than the decent chunky bitter home-made stuff, but it works ok against the sweetish eating appley cider behind. It’s quite thin but I think this helps offset the sweetness and leaves it as a light, refreshing and pleasant cider. It is however, a little polite at times and it did leave me wondering what it’d be like if you made a souped-up version with rough scrumpy and bitter Olde English-style marmalade.
