Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours almost black with a medium sized beige head. The aroma is a curious mixture of coffee and shoe polish – with some roast malts thrown in for good measure ! In the mouth coffee grounds are the immediate flavour, along with roast malts and toasty. Gradually liquorice, damsons, and unripe bitter fruits grow to join them. Alcoholic strength only comes out in the finish which is bitter and boozy. This is a top notch beer.

Very surprised I haven’t rated this before as I’ve drunk it many a time. I can recall becoming frustrated that it wasn’t listed as an option of Lymestone when doing CAMRA beer scoring ! Anyway, cask at Standing Order, Derby. ~pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with minimal off-white head. There’s some vague summer fruits in the aroma, but not much else. In the mouth it has floral hops and morello cherries combining to give a slightly sour edge. Hints of herbs as well and a touch of bitterness in the finish. It’s OK but not really my sort of beer at all.

Anyway, pours a golden yellow that is slow to settle but weventually gives a small foamy white head and good lacing. The aroma has malts and some continental hoppiness. Slightly sweet in the mouth, with malts and caramel prominent There are traces of floral hops and lemongrass as well, and there texture is slightly syrupy. Rounded off with a malty finish. This is a bit run of the mill, but it’s OK.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a golden amber with a small white head and good lacing. There’s a mainly malty aroma to this one, with some hints of autumn fruit. Mouthwise it starts off sweet and fruity before some floral hops come into play. Later still citrus and traces of spices come through, and they take over for the finish. Quite nice but a tad too citrussy for me.

Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours a hazy very pale straw with a small white head and good lacing, Not much of an aroma, vaguely citrus with some cherries. Plenty of fruit in the flavour. Tangerine, grapefruit and melon along with some floral hops on a biscuity base. Bitterness comes through later on. Finish is dry with plenty of citrus. It’s a decent enough beer but too citrussy for my liking. Also, I wouldn’t call it a bitter (too hoppy) maybe a pale ale or a session IPA ?
