Description
Housed beneath The Rat and Ratchet and since the very first brew of Lab Rat in 2011, head brewer, Paul Spencer and brewer Robin Moss, have created rodent themed beers to critical acclaim. Our beers are distinctive, extreme, generally intensely hopped and anything but average, experimenting with a range of different beer styles, strengths and ingredients. Rat beer is now infecting all four corners of the UK faster than the Black Death, turning a local infestation into a national plague. White Rat in particular has emerged as the flagship beer and now sits within the Ossett core range.

Cask at Rat & Ratchet, Huddersfield. April 2016. Pours light hazed golden amber with a slim white cap. Aroma: caramel & orange, some chilli. Taste: light sweet & bitter, semi-dry, caramel, herbal hop, a little chilli coming through in the aftertaste. Light to medium body with light carbonation. As one correspondent notes it's seemingly quite a poor base beer, not much to see here. Bland/dull.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small cream head. Chocolate and malts to the fore in the aroma. Immediate reaction in the mouth, is how sweet and watery it is. However, flavour does come through in due course. Chiefly roasted malts but with good helpings of milky chocolate and a little coffee and hints of fruit. It’s OK, but Rat have done better beers than this.
