Bottle. Slightly hazy amber with an inch of off white head that lasts well. Aroma of vague tropical fruit, toffee, some floral and peppery notes. Smooth texture with lowish carbonation. Sweet caramel, some peach, murky tropical fruit, gentle bitterness with some peppery at the still rather sweet end. Pleasant enough, but not really my sort of thing.

Pours black with a lasting tan head.Nose shows liquorice, sweet bready malt, light roast, chocolate and soft roasted coffee. Lovely.Similarly rich and decadent flavours. Sweet chocolate malt, nutty malt, chocolate liqueur followed by some roast. Perhaps a little overly sweet.

[8/14] Mini growler, 14C. Black with a tan head that sticks around as a coat w spots of lace. Aroma of coffee, molasses, heavy roast, dark berries, licorice, some lighter spicy sweetmeats and floral notes. Alcohol noticeable. Smooth, oily texture. Sweet with dark berries, plums and coffee, roast and some ash come in after a while. Bitterness creeps up and the finish is dry with lingering coffee, tar and a little booze. The balance is _really_ nice though - there’s enough sweetness that it doesn’t seem over-dry or acrid, but not so much that it seems to need cleaning up. Really like that the complexities are ornaments complementary to the main themes. No newfangled hops or spirits, just a big stout with spandrels. Very good indeed. [4.2][6/17]Tap. Since I last had this the new version of Courage RIS has been around. Now it all makes sense. Only a taster this time, so I’ll resist the temptation to fiddle with the score.

Bottle bought in Brisbane, August 2014. Black with a small tan head. Nice aroma and taste of mainly chocolate, coffee, licorice and some milk. Thick body but with a smooth mouthfeel. A nice one to sip.

From a 330ml bottle on 13/8/2014. Pours a dark cola colour with a medium off white head. The aroma features some caramel, stewed fruits and some basement notes out of the glass. Take a sip and there’s lots of sweet dark fruit (plums, prunes), caramel and chocolate, with a slightly sharp, boozy bitterness at the back. It has a rich, sticky palate and relatively lively carbonation. This is solid and enjoyable but not overly complex, and simply not in the same class as the Nail Imperial Porter I downed last night.

From a 330ml bottle on 12/8/2014. Pours not far off black with a medium tan head. Has a wonderful, powerful complex aroma featuring masses of toffee, caramel, molasses and stewed fruit. Take a sip and you get a huge treacle/golden syrup sweetness, along with more toffee and caramel, licorice and touch of milk chocolate and dark fruit. There’s quite a firm balancing bitterness which rounds things out beautifully. The palate is creamy and the carbonation is average to lively. Holy crap this is impressive - rich, complex and possibly the best porter I’ve ever had. A truly world class brew and a most delightful surprise.

Bottle. Very dark brown with an inch of beige head. Laces well. Aroma of hazelnuts, sticky fruit buns, chocolate, toasted seaweed. Fairly overt alcohol unhappily masks some of the flavours, but sweet bread, nuts and chocolate come through. Firm bitterness. Booziness really spoils the party for me.

Bottle, 13C (too cold). Almost black with a tan head that’s soon a coat but then lasts. Aroma of figs, mocha, molasses. Sweet mocha and treacle, figs and dark cherries, mocha, peppery at the moderately bitter finish. A lovely, enveloping beer.

Bottle. Dark brown with a pale beige head that’s soon a lasting coat and leaves nice lace. Beech smoke, toasty caramel, light spices. Quite deep burnt ends/ caught glazed meat smokiness. Sweetish and quite full-bodied with convincing smoke but not all that much depth to the toffee flavours. Some chocolate, nuts. Pleasantly bitter finish. Pretty good.
