Dry-hopped (with Hallertau) and spiced (with rosemary) sour ale from this highly acclaimed young Dutch sour specialist, at 1st Lambic & Sour Sunday in Vichte. Irregular, moussy, off-white head, cloudy ochre blonde robe with golden hue. Unusual but delicious aroma of fresh rosemary - herbal and floral at the same time, also somewhat reminiscent of elderflowers, lavender, very old fennel seed and camomile, goat cheese, yoghurt, dry white wine, lemon zest, white currant. Very fruity onset, lots of unripe stonefruit, yellow plum- and gooseberry-like, white grape peel wryness but softly so, soft soapy and bready middle upon which the sour fruitiness continues unabated until it meets the wonderful herbal character from both the rosemary and the dry-hopping, aromatically filling the finish completely, while below a lemony sourness dries the mouth. Interesting and original idea perfectly executed to a very idiosyncratic, lush, herbal, even softly spicy, hugely aromatic sour - what a gem...

Sour ale by this young Dutch sour specialist, made with blackcurrant and brambleberries. Very thin, dirty off-pinkish, lightly lacing but quickly dissolving head over a beautifully deep, misty ruby red beer with a deep fuchsia hue. Rich and delicious aroma reveals more (ripe and stewed) blackberry than blackcurrant but a cassis aspect is certainly there, along with sweet cherry tomato, cooked rhubarb, red wine vinegar, unsugared yoghurt, fermenting hay, sour cream, goat cheese, purple gooseberries, plum pie. Crisp, sour onset with a puckering lemony acidity to it, a ton of blackberries again as well as somewhat more subdued, but noticeable blackcurrant, very estery, soft spicy notes, deep lactic yoghurty tartness drying the palate throughout, pleasantly bready or even crumble-like core, fruitiness goes on till deep into the finish with some retronasal funky notes. This is so rich in tart red fruit that, in combination with the sweetish bread core, it reminds me of old-fashioned, artisanal fruit desserts, like the rhubarb pie my grandmother used to make... Stunning and doubtlessly a beer with huge gastronomic possibilities, e.g. in combination with all kinds of fruit-containing desserts. I am beginning to see why Tommie Sjef has become such an acclaimed name in such a short time period.
