Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

Tap @ Boston/NY 2009. Dark color, short head. Aroma of roasted malt, on a bitter background. Quite strong taste for a doppelbock.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an orange-brown color with a medium sized beige head that produced good lacing. The aroma was faint tangy malts with hints of molasses and cherry. The flavor was tangy, tart and bitter with light notes of cherry, sour caramel and nut. The finish was short, tangy and bitter. Medium body. Ok.

Very disappointed in this one. Pours black with dissipating mocha head. Mocha and Vanilla bean coffee aroma. Flavor is similar but surprisingly not all that satisfying. I’ve had better in this genre. Rated on 11/1/08

Bottle. What is it with this brewery? This is the second bottle from Atwater that I have tried to drink and the second bottle that exploded with foam and then tasted like sour, carbonated liquid badness. From what I tasted this beer has very little body and way too much carbonation. No malts to speak of. I need to give this brewery a fair shake, but right now I’m a little put out.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly's, 3/18/10 - March Madness!
Aroma: Nose is fairly light, some caramel malts, dough, and citrus notes
Appearance: Pours a clear caramel color with a beige head and lots of lace
Flavor: Flavor is mostly malty, some caramel, pepper, earth, light hop bitterness, slightly tart finish
Palate: The body if this one is medium, with a somewhat metallic mouthfeel
Overall Impression: My second rating from this brewery is my first rating of the 2010 NCAA Tourney, and is for this alright beer. I just wasn't really impressed, but at the same time it isn't horrible. I love a good Imperial Amber, but this one misses that mark.

12 oz bottle. Opens with a hiss and pours gold with a huge white head that means it takes a while to finish pouring, but that might be due to using this new pilsener glass. Aroma of biscuity malts and some red apple. Flavor is biscuity, a bit stale, with a mild bitter hop presence. A rather tame pilsener with some off flavors and aromas.

Pour is a dark brown with a large tan head. Aroma is not much. Just some sweet doughy malt. Flavor is some roasted malts with a bit of caramel and ends with some brown sugar. I don’t know why this is imperial other than the 7.5%. One of the better Atwater’s i have had but that ain’t saying much.

11th October 2008. GABF. Clear dark brown beer. Smooth palate. Slighty toasted malt. The vanilla provides a nice balance to the dark flavours. Dry finish.
