Description
“Founded in 1997, Atwater Block Brewery made its debut in Detroit, Michigan in the historic Rivertown district. The original owner’s reasoning and focus was to bring back the Bohemian style lager that Stroh’s Brewing Company had made famous in the mid 1800’s. The passion for beer started in 1848 when the first mass produced beer was bottled in the Detroit area. So although Detroit is known for being the Motor city, at one time Michigan had more production breweries than anyone in the country. Atwater wanted to re-invent that product back in 1997 of making German style Lagers. The owners purchased a Kasper Schulz, the oldest makers of brewing equipment in the world! It was purchased at a trade show in 1996 and by 1997 Atwater was producing beer!

Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

On tap at the MBG Summer Festival. Poured black with a brown head. Aroma consisted of sweet vanilla and dark coffee notes. Flavor consisted of vanilla and chocolate notes, but it became overly sweet and left a ridiculously sweet aftertaste.

On tap at MBG Summer Festival. Poured black with a brown head. Dark chocolate notes with an under tone of cherry. Flavor consisted of dark notes and cherry notes but they combated each other rather than mixing well.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Dark orange-brown body, almost sanguine, topped by a thin cream head. Huge nose of burnt caramel, wet hay, and alcohol, dry and medicinal. Interesting body with unexpected sweet berries complementing the heavy caramels, hay, and alcohol. Leafy, bitter hops attempt to cut the heavy malts and booze. Potent and thick without being too sweet.

12oz bottle. Gusher upon opening. Black, with slight hint of deep red. Big foamy beige head. Smooth chocolate aroma, some very faint cherry. The taste is quite nice, tart and creamy at the same time. The cherry is quite tart and astringent, good but a touch artificially infused. Medium bodied, this is a beer I’d love to session. Not much roast, the cherry really balances all of that out. Underrated.

12oz bottle. Absolute gusher, two inch foamy soapy lasting head. When it finally all made it into the glass it did look pretty nice. Orange amber color, quite murky and thick. The aroma has a nice hop and Bocky malt balance. The taste is relatively straightforward, quality sweet malt. Perfectly balanced, the hops are present, but never overbearing. Great Maibock.

Sampled on draft at Rivertowne this beer poured a hazy yellow-gold with a medium sized white head. The aroma was sweet and had a moderate citrusy fruitiness. The flavor was a bit tart, tangy and musty with a moderate citrus element. Decent.

Light brown. Slight haze. The aroma shows a fair bit of pedio with maybe some roast notes. Tart, some cherryish notes. Watery towards the finish. Light roast. This one is too tart and the stank aroma is not cool at all.

S6L4F3T7O16+Shamans porter; on tap at the Bocktown; nice place. Nice dark creamy pour, has a pleasant head. Good mild roasty aroma. Very well behaved on the taste buds. Easy to like. Fun to get along with. Especially friendly and nifty. Overall good experience. First-rate appetizing finish.

Smells mildly like a dark beer, roasty and a tad sweet. There is also a slight soap perfume in there too. Initial impression is that it hides its alky content well for 6.5%. No head on the pour, it looks flat even tho it does have some hints of creamy carbonation on the tongue. Has gunk on the bottom of the bottle. Each slug is followed by a delayed cherry background reaction, it remains hidden until the finish takes place. Hide and seek cherry. Woody leather in there too. I liked this experience, normally I don’t care for these kinds of beers but I found this quite enjoyable. Finish is quite nice, no hints of alky is easily detected.
