Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

2013 version drank early 2016. Pours out like engine oil. Pitch black dark, tons of dark fruit, roasted malt, molasses and cacao in the nose. Tons of dark fruit, molasses, roasted malts, medium dry body, alcohol is well hidden. Low carbonation. Nice lingering malt and cacao finish. Excellent example of an imperial stout. Another winner from Bellwoods.

Black color with medium head. Aroma of boutique coffee, cardboard, bread, old furniture, dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is very dry, but it blends the coffee and dark chocolate very well; weak final structure.
Very good.

2017-04-18, Oxford tasting, bottle, vintage 2016, 8-4-8-4-16=40
Dark brown color, oily and with no head. Wonderful aroma, rum, chocolate, tar. Oily mouthfeel, tar, chocolate, with rum boozyness.
Interesting.

Jet black color, frothy small brown head. Very nice aroma, strong, a bit phenolic, raisins, rye bread, malt, a bit of alcohol, luscious (8.5). The strong alcohol helps to cut the thickness, it's lean, it has a bit too much liquorice, moderately sweet, a bit spicy in the middle, and boozy in the finish.
The aroma was inviting, but it ends being quite messy.

Hazy light amber color. Pungent aroma, dry, lean mouthfeel, the malt flavor is a bit biscuity, not impressive, but very good hop flavor, pungent resins, some cedar peel and passion fruit; strong bitterness in the final.
Very good.

Cloudy orange-blond color with small head. The aroma is sour and soapy, vinous; interesting but controversial. Good body strength, there are still some sugars left; the Brett left a harsh, astringent, chalky character; the fruit presence is nice.
A complicated beer, chaotic.

Bottle: Poured a hazy dirty beige color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention. Aroma of light citrusy hops with some light fruit flavors and some light funky notes. Taste is also dominated by citrusy notes with some light funky notes and some light tart apricot notes. Body is pretty full for style with good carbonation. Interesting thought Brett could have been even more upfront.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a cloudy red with a tiny white head. Aroma brings out lacto notes, faded cherries and a little brett. Flavour brings out a great mix of brett and faded cherries. The brett penetrates well, without obscuring the cherries too much. Very nice.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a cloudy golden with a small white head. Nose brings out complex barnyard funk from the brett, followed by some piney hop and biscuity malt. Flavour is very bretty, with a lovely funk character, some biscuity malt and floral piney hops. The brett is perfectly situated. Highly drinkable. Excellent.
