Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a dark brown / black with a tiny beige head. Aroma of brings out notes of sweet chocolate, light roast, light coffee, and some dark fruits -- it's not a robust nose, but there are many notes. Flavour brings out faded chocolate, some dark fruitiness, some burnt notes, and licorice. Pretty light on the palate, with restrained flavours. Pleasant enough, but this leaves much to be desired. A rare miss from Bellwoods -- not overly thrilling.

A deep dark ale with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with light corky notes, funk, light licorice, grassy notes, espresso, OK. In mouth, a rather tart and harsh chocolate, off flavors, spoiled, burnt character, not pleasant. On tap at Sacred Oak fest.

Bottle from the brewery. Very dark brown pour with a small tight deep khaki head. Nose is lots of dark chocolate, roast and coffee with light vanilla and just a hint of the coconut appearing. Taste is medium bitter chocolate and coffee with light vanilla and the coconut coming through more strongly in a nice balance. Hints of dark fruit and cherry appears as it warms.. Medium full and creamy palate with soft carbonation. Excellent

(On tap at the brewery May 8, 2014 and in bottle after) Pours very pale hazy straw with a big bubbly active white head and no lace. Aroma lactic, slightly funky cheese and barnyard Brett, lightly lemony, white wine and some oak. The palate is nicely full-flavoured for a berliner, lactic, some lemon, lots of white wine vinousness and subtle fruit, wood and Brett. Finishes fairly clean, nice and acidic with lingering oaked wine notes. Body is fairly light, carb soft and bright, perfect summer beer weight. Barrel and brett nicely flesh out the berliner body here, especially on the palate. Great low alcohol alternative to a white wine, perfect patio sipper.

500mL bottle, pours a cloudy pale golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out astringent floral hops and crackery malt. Flavour is exactly the same, with wheaty dry hops and dry crackery malt. Not the most interesting beer from these dudes, but still decent.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours black with a medium tan head. Nose is full of roasted malt and piney hops - very bold and elegant aromatics. Flavour is extremely robust and amazingly elegant, with roasted malt, dark berries, wonderful piney and resinous hops, and finishing roast, dry and fruity. Wow, what an elegant imperial black IPA. Really rich, multi-layered and dynamic in the mouthfeel. Phenomenal stuff once again from Bellwoods.

Bottle from the brewery. 5%. It pours a pinkish orange that settles into a deep gold in the glass.  The aroma is a luscious hibiscus and orange with a bitter pine finish. The taste is fruity & floral at first then earthy pine and a soft bitter finish. A really subtle but delicious beer.
