Description
We are George and Tom Jenkinson, brothers and directors of our family run brewery. Founded in 1980 by our father and mother, Richard and Lesley Jenkinson, we remain the oldest independent brewery in the Chiltern Hills and Buckinghamshire.

Located on an old working farm in the heart of the Chiltern Hills, the emphasis has always been to produce natural, wholesome beers using the best, class A malt and hops sourced in England. Our brewing process mirrors age-old methods and our beers are brewed with skill, passion and integrity. We have always been proud to support British farmers and all of our ingredients have a good provenance.

(Gravity cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 23 Nov 2012) Chestnut colour with almost no head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of apple, caramel and vinous aromas of dry sherry. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, apple juice, dry sherry and a slight rancio character in the finish. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness and a generous bitterness with slightly leafy hops. Quite complex, but a really tasty barley wine. Nice one.

[500ml bottle from the brewer’s own stand at the Thame Food Festival] Pours deep gold with a mdeium white head and a moderate fizz. Rather lager-y in flavour up front, then some florals and citrus - and unfortunately a hint of vomit. Dry from the off, but as always from Chiltern there’s a good, rich, malty mouthfeel. More florals in the long, slightly bitter finish. One of those golden ales which are crafted to try & tempt in lager drinkers, who will no doubt ignore it entirely & stick to their tasteless megabrands. Unfortunately, the light flavours and hint of lager will mean that it’s also shunned by ale drinkers. So it’s a bit pointless really, plus thehint of vomit put me off. Very disappointing from one of my favourite local brewers.

Gravity Dispense at the White horse Parsons Green. It pours clear golden amber with no head. The nose is rather bland... syrupy sweet, honey and tinned fruit. The taste is rather sweet, raisin, golden syrup, wood, leaf and melon. Medium body, flat, syrupy and cloying. A challenge to drink.

Cask at The White Horse Old Ale Festival, London. Pours clear ruby with a small, tan foam head - it looks great. Big bready malt nose with light toast. Light to medium sweet flavor with dried fruits, bread, toffee and a touch of tang. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately dry to finish with dried berries and bready malts. Alright.

[Cask fom the brewer’s own stand at the Thame Food Festival] My first green hop beer, apparently grown from self-seeded wild hops at the brewery. Light amber with a slight white head. Leafy nettle, a little lemon and some blackberry leaf give a rather grubby overall flavour. Chiltern have as usual got a decent mouthfeel, but flavourwise this is not one of their better beers I’m afraid.

Bottle purchased from the Kings Head, Aylesbury, Bucks, Saturday 22nd September 2012 consumed at home Sunday 23rd September 2012 Pours light gold, good clarity slim white head atop. Fairly average golden ale, though as with many from Chiltern it us beyond criticism other than for the fact that it fails to excite and is far too safe. Middling bitterness, not to much sweetness, dry, little bit fruity, but lacks a defining character to make it stand out from the myriad of other cattle in the safe MOR golden ale shed. Cask handpump at The Kings Head, Aylesbury, Bucks, Saturday 22nd September 2012 Pours amber with a light filmy head, good clarity, golden glints eminating from body of beer in the early autumn sun. Light malty and fresh nose, hoppy but not overly so, middling bitterness, its fine but touch safe, in fact very safe, if you’re going to use locally grown fresh English hops then use plenty.
