Light amber color. Frothy white head. Lots of citrusy hoppy nose, but pretty simple. The mouth is clean, balanced but lacks bitterness for an American pale ale, but not bad. Clean modestly bitter finish. Certainly not bad, but a bit of a stepping stone beer which I guess that is what it is intended to be.

Can. Reasonably hoppy nose, citrus, biscuits, a little something strange too. Light malt flavor, citrus hops, thin, taste of spirits. No malt character to speak of. Ok nose bit thin crap flavor.

Suntory The Malts Umami 5% Served in my teku glass it's a deep gold with a thick foamy white head. The aroma is savoury sweet grainy maize maltiness with some green hop bitterness. The taste is super sweet, grainy sugary, almost like an artificial sweetener with a mild hop bite. The body is slick, oily and sweet. With all these pseudo-craft beers being made it’s hard to keep on top of them all. I decided to follow Suntory’s Craft Select series.I missed the Märzen 5.5% when it first came out but was able to track it down. It pours a light amber with a malty caramel biscuit aroma that isn’t half bad. Light bodied with a dry finish and sharp carbonation I don’t care for so much. The taste is nutty, aspartame like artificial sugar, tannic maltiness. Smells better than it tastes, drinkable but I’ll pass on this if I see it again...

500 ml can. Nice nose. Bit malt, citrus and herbal saaz hops. Clear, deep gold with low, fine head. Flavor is much less interesting. Yes, there is umami, in ths kind of sickly way, rich amino acids, almost shellfish-y, MSG kind of thng. Heavy, just a bit cloying, too full. Ok hoppy finish though. Not as bad as many have said, but the regular beers are better for sure.

Suntory The Premium Malt’s Hojun Ale This beer poured the same glaring orange as the can with a similar fizzy head to Asahi’s Dry Saison that vanished in an instant. The aroma is sugary with light caramel notes and stale biscuits - not my thing so far. Tongue scraping carbonation, on a light body makes for a pretty unpleasant mouthfeel. It makes me feel gassy. The taste isn’t that good: caramel, sugar, ashes, astringeant bitterness and the finish gives me artificial sweetener. Asahi’s Dry Saison is the clear winner between these two. It was passable but this is a drain pour I am really not loving it.

(can) clear pale yellow colour with a tall, white head; aroma starts with noble hops, then cake; balanced, simple and unremarkable flavour with a medium long, light bitter finish

Can from Jusco. Deep amber orange color, clear, with a tall, airy head. Nose is a bit tinny, with caramel, light raisin, and a touch of chocolate. Very simple. Flavor is slightly better, slightly chewy caramel and malts, dried fruit, chocolate fudge. Body is too thin, though. Somewhat bitter finish. Passable but less than memorable dunkel.

Can from Family Mart. Drank straight from the can. Caramel and light fruit esters on the nose. Taste is more of the same with some wet paper. Sweet on the palate with a sweet finish. Tall boy can. PRetty orange-brown, clear, low head. Nose is kind of typical for an industrian Japanese ale: estery, peaches, oranges, caramel. Ok, nothing special. Falvor is a bit better, some caramel sweetness, full malt character, esters, earthy hops. Not bad.
