Description

Picked this up in Antwerp October 2006. This beer poured dark brown with a frothy white head, aroma was a bit port like with some dried fruits. Taste a bit sweet,. alcohol quite present, spicey, dried fruits. Very good Belgian christmas ale.

750ml bottle, best by 01/09/07 - Pours dark brown with a huge, billowy head. It has a fairly light aroma with yeast and some maltiness. The flavor is a bready malt with some yeast noticeable and a metallic twinge. I can still taste the latter a little bit in the finish. I’m not sure if this is just my preferences or there’s something wrong with this bottle, but it’s not as good as I expected given a rating here that puts it in the top ten of Abbey Dubbels. It has a surprisingly light flavor and a mouthfeel that verges on watery. It’s also pretty one dimensional, so the descriptions here that make it sound so complex make me wonder about my bottle. I’ve had the whole large bottle to myself, so there’s plenty by which to judge and it’s not getting any better. It’s drinkable, but at $10 for the bottle from a liquor store, it’s absolutely not worth it. Disappointing.

(33 cl bottle at The Rover, Göteborg) Very "particle" beer look, full of flaky yeast particles. Light yellow color, white head. Sweet Belgian ale yeast scent. Refreshing sweet palate and taste.

Bottled(250ml). –Shared with Doggythedog at the Hopdevil in Zagreb
Reddish brown coloured, medium beige head, fruity and slight alcoholic nose. Quite ordinary but pleasant "Belgian taste". Malty, fruity and of course spicy. Pleasant sweet alcoholic finish.

Bottle at the Hopdevil in Zagreb shared with ozujsko (thanks!) He ordered the Gouden Carolus Christmas and got this. Ah well, it was better for me as I haven’t had this one before. It poured a nice, huge beige thick head that went away at a medium pace on top of a dark red body. The nose was nice, raspberry jaffa cakes, candied fruit, a bit earthy and chocolatey. The taste was similar. Dark sugar, smooth, dark fruit (raisins), a bit spicey. Just a touch metallic. Pleasantly sweet and smooth. A noticable chewy hopiness in the background that carried into the aftertaste. Didn’t impress me as much as its Gouden Carolus counterpart, but it’s still a great beer.

Clear gold color with giant white head foam explosive carbonation. Mild aroma of yeast spice. Flavor seems to be all over the place. I taste some malt and sugar sweetness, something sour and tart and then some spiciness. Great mix of flavors.

Bottled. Dark amberish ruby colour with huge beige head. Lacing. Aroma is caramel, citrusfruit malts and sugar. Slight alcoholic hints also. Flavour is yeast, hops, grass and some caramel. Felt kind of "watery" and empty while being cold, but once it got warmer it got very smooth and pleasant.
