Description

One of many (primarily Western Flemish) WW I remembrance beers, a dubbel (confusingly named 'dubbel-tripel') by Strubbe, accidentally encountered in some random pub in Antwerp, shared by Craftmember. Very thick and frothy, egg-white, lacing, very stable and moussy head over a dark bronze-brown beer with burgundy hue, darker than average for a dubbel. Aroma of hard caramel candy, strong iron (head stabilizer), dry tea bags, tree branches, coriander seed, old coffee grounds, walnut shells. Sweetish onset with light sourish edge, dried berries and figs but in a very subdued way, fizzy carbonation; straightforward, cereally and caramelly maltiness, dryish and with a clear, bothersome metallic edge, simple herbal hop bitterishness in the finish with toasty malt bitterness accentuating the hops. Not too sweet in comparison with many 'commercial' dubbels, but still rather thin, simple, bland and metallic, hardly a tribute to the brave men who perished at the front lines in both World Wars.

Limited Edition Bottle. Number is: 5861. Ladna lakierowana butelka. Po otworzeniu, bez glosnego huku i bez dymku. Wyglad bardziej Brown niz Red, ale Sour byl i to konkretny, tak wlasnie jak lubie, kwasne fermentujace jablka, drewno, scierka wilgotna, zero slodowosci i nawet minimalnej slodyczy. bylo tu nieco jezyn i jakby jalowca. Do tego dominujacy kwas octowy. Alez to powykrzywialo by co niektorym usta. Piwo jest klarowne z niemal pol centymetrowa pianka, ktora opada szybciej niz mrugnieta powieka. Bardzo wyraziste i kwasne piwo. Zabojczo smaczne jak dla mnie

25cl bottle from Vanuxeem. Pours a clear amber, very thin white head that recedes. Aroma has English ale fruit, toffee yeast. Taste bears a gentle sweetness, some ripe fruit, light toffee, medium sweet malt, body seems quite light and oily. Harmless easy-drinker with English bitter elements.

At Cambrinus, Bruges. Shared with Anke. Pours hazy amber with a thin, off-white head. The aroma contains caramel, candi sugar, herbs, yeast, apple and bread. It tastes light caramel-like sweet and light to medium herbal bitter; dry, herbal finish with lingering sweet malt. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Quenching, unremarkable Amber (a bit like Slaapmutske Bruin). You can't have a Double Barrel Aged Imperial Stout every day so in that way, this beer serves its purpose.

At Uncle Babe's Burger Bar, Ghent. Shared with Anke.
Pours clear golden with a lasting, foamy, white head. The aroma contains malt, grain, hops, some honey. It tastes light malty sweet and light to medium grainy bitter; shortish, dry, hoppy, grainy finish. Light body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation. Just okay; better than the well-known industrial Lagers.
