Beer #1 of the Ohio Labor Day gathering hosted by aofoxxy, brought by the one and only BBB63. Sediment-rich dark brown body, reminiscent of prune juice, with a thin off-white head in an Orval glass. Slightly tangy, toasty, wheaty aroma with a touch of prunes and plenty of layered breads. Very bready flavor with hints of prune, toffee, and toast, light tanginess and a slight bitter biscuity character in the finish. Complex and rich with evident alcohol notes. Very good!

12 oz bottle-pours a thin white head. Color is a semi-cloudy gold/straw. Aroma is wheat&sweet. Taste is wheat, pear (clove) and has good carbonation.

2004 version, hand bottled by Maibockaddict, thanks again Dave!
Deep orange-amber color with some dark mahogany browns and light crimson tints. Hazy, unpasteurised and bottle conditioned. Aroma is quite reminiscent of the Winter Wheat, but has a more pronounced tobacco and charred-wood aroma to it. Some dry toffee, a touch of alcohol and bitter, dark chocolate. Roasty, nutty, coffee-like notes as well. Flavor builds off of the non-iced version, but takes the chocolate, tobacco and roast up a notch. There’s more to sink your teeth in to on this one, with some dry, oily fruit flavors (grapeskin, currants, apples, some banana) on the finish. Thick woodsmoke on the palate throughout, with a light saltiness and a bit of alcohol. Nothing like what I expected, and like no other eisbock I’ve tried, not even the Schneider Aventinus weizen-eis. Overflowing with quality and care of brewing.

2004 bottle, second batch of the season, in an awesome trade with Maibockaddict. Fabulous dark, caramel-brown color, muddy consistency, with plenty of sediment in the bottle. Peppery carbonation at first, but allowing it to breath quickly solves that problem. Tan head, lasting and lace-creating. Aroma of clove cigarettes, banana, dark berries and light German hops. Smells more like a hefe-weisse at first, but as it warms up and breathes more, some of the sweet caramel and raisin aroma is released.
Flavor starts out with a rich toffee and caramel flavor, which is only lightly sweet. Quickly transitions in to a more rounded wheat, sugar and chocolate mix with notes of ash and dry berry-skins as it finishes. The more I drink, the more a distinct black currant flavor creeps in on my palate. Towards the end of the bottle, I am marveling at how distinct, yet subtle it is. Adds a light bitterness and slight astringency, which does not hurt the beer, but also adds a wondrous flavor. I laughed when I read the commercial description, highly skeptical that there would be any real black currant flavor, but here it is. Light clove and apple notes keep the sugars in check, while a faint dark chocolate adds great complexity. Medium body and maybe a bit too much dryness could be it’s only downfall, but I havent tried the other batch yet. I can’t detect the alcohol.

2004 bottle from Maibockaddict, thanks again! Finally I get to try a god-damned beer from High Point. I’ve had my eyes on the Winter Wheat ever since I started rating 3 years ago. I decided to start with the classic, and it definitely didnt disappoint. Fantastic pour, and it’s very encouraging to see plenty of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Caramel-brown-yellow body, with some deep orange and tan hues, quite muddy looking with a large light tan head. Huge malted wheat aroma, with spicy esters, lightly spicy tettnang hops and plenty of light coffee and roast. Flavor begins with light chocolate, licorice and light coffee. Peppery, natural carbonation seems a problem at first, but giving the beer time to breath eliminates this. Butterscotch (not diacetyl, but a good butterscotch flavor), caramel corn and wheat, with a light trace of hops on the finish. Medium body, slightly watery, yet it dosent hurt the flavor and makes it that much more drinkable. I think I drank this beer in under 2 minutes. A touch of astringency from the roast and wheat could be my only real complaints.

Bottled. Hazy dark brown. Banana aroma. Sweet and richly malty, full bodied. Some caramel and yeast as well as banana. Lightly grassy finish. A good weizenbock.

Very dark amber color; poor head. Quite classic Weizen Bock aroma, malty and caramel with a peculiar candies aroma. Quite sweet, oily, caramel, far from being complex…

An unclear dark brown beer with a disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet wheaty, but also with some berry notes. The flavor is sweet and dominated by wheat, but it also contains some berries. The end is quite dry and the mouthfeel very smooth.

Deep dark lager with a wonderful nose of raisins, brown suar, bananas, very aromatic. Rich bananas and cloves with roasted mlats in attack and fruits in finish. Oily mouthfeel. Very nice body, very full.

April 2004. In honor of MaibockAddict. Golden ale with a fruity slightly lactic aroma. Good malts and apples with aromatic alcoholic warmth. Very smooth and balanced.
