Description
Looming large over Princess Parkway with its towering cylinders and chimneys belching steam, Manchester's Heineken brewery is one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. Beer has been brewed on the site since 1875, when it was known as the Albert Brewery. It was later sold to John Henry Lees, who changed its name to the Moss Side Brewery. In 1907 it was renamed the Royal Brewery in honour of King Edward VII. The brewery changed hands again in 1913 when Lees' company went into liquidation and it was later absorbed by another local brewery, Walker & Homfrays. The UK's first lager, Red Tower, was brewed here in 1927, named after the building's most striking feature. The brewery took its name too in 1933, becoming the Red Tower Lager Brewery. In 1955 the brewery became known as the Royal Moss Side Brewery and was bought by Scottish Brewers a few years later. After several more changes of ownership, Heineken took over the site in 2008. Today the main beers produced and packaged there are Foster's and Kronenbourg 1664.

Drank straight from the 0.5 l can. Medium bodied, average carbonated. Bitter in taste. Average, but I was fine with it.

slightly opalescent golden colour, one inch of dense ecru-ish white head; aroma fruity, linden honey, grainy, and slight herbal notes; taste of hoppy bitterness and the same notes as can be felt in the aroma; surprisingly enjoable

Not a brilliant lager but seemed to be an appropriate one to drink while watching the Italy/Wales match in the 6 Nations. Bought at Tesco, drank at home.

Bottle from Sainsbury's and drunk at home. As I opened the bottle you could actually smell the hop flowers. Impressive. Slight haze dark gold colour lasting white head. Hop flower aroma. No such going on in the mouth. Some pale malt. Then some white flower white pepper flavour in the mouth. Not huge character but a lot better than I was expecting. Decent lager. With a decent finish.

Can. Pours a clear pale yellow-gold with small white head which fades. Corn, grain, very light floral hop on nose. Watery to light bodied, some corn and grain but cleaner than some mass produced lagers. Light hop tingle and reasonable bitterness.

Christmas present from some relatives but at least it's a tick. Aroma is not great - a waft of fag tray as soon as I start pouring. Fags and glue and malts. Clear gold. Frothy foamy white head. Oooh. Sour. Bitter. A combination of citrus, malts, grains and a tramp's damp pockets worth of dog ends. Light. Thin to slick. Fizzy carbonation c9mes across quite dimwitted. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Awful.

UK version @ 4.8% in a 660ml bottle from Tesco. Deep golden in colour, with a slight, white, head. Malty aroma with a trace of sea air and lemon fruit. Flavour was also predominantly malty, with a hint of fruity sweetness and a suggestion of the salt in the finish. A competent lager.
