Zurige stout. Pure chocolade, sterk gebrande koffie.

Bottle purchased at estaminet de brouwerij. Pours black, small white head. Smell is intemse, roasted grains, very full, rhum. Taste is full, roasted grains. Sharp boozy touch from the rhum, but has a good balance. Nice intensity of tastes, without being overkill. On another barrel I would have been more enthousiastic, perhaps, bit as far as rhum barrels go, this is def one of the best ones i’ve had so far. Intensity and mouthfeel (silky ) are very nice. Perhaps a bit more thickness would make this truly comparable with beers in the top league. I like where this is headed.

The second installment in this series, a hibiscus-flavoured ale. Bottle shared by and with tderoeck, thanks! Very violent gusher, spouting out of the bottle during opening. Very thick, rocky, foamy, cobweb-lacing, pale lilac coloured head over a hazy ruby red beer, looking like a sweet ’kriek’ or something along those lines. Aroma of hibiscus flowers indeed but in a dried and candied form, like the ones sometimes plunged into a glass of champagne, also smelling like rosehip tea including its metallic aspect; other impressions include red ’Haribo’ candy, lavender soap, violets, lemon, red apple, white bread. Rather artificially fruity onset, with flavours reminiscent of blueberry and raspberry, sweet but not overly cloying with the sugary sweetness being balanced a bit by an underlying, softly lime-like sourishness; fizzy carbo, smooth and cereally malt core with a light caramelly edge but drowned in this hibiscus thing, floral in a soapy and artificial way with that sugary sweet aspect persisting till the end, where it is countered by a hop bitter touch, thus avoiding stickiness; the soapy, sweetish and lightly sourish flavours cling to the back of the mouth. Absolutely not my kind of beer - I was already suspicious when the brewer told me the second one in this series was going to be a hibiscus beer - and anything but subtle, not to mention the gushing. I will keep an eye on the third Homo Beerectus when it comes out, but if that one fails to impress me as well, I don’t think I am going to keep following this project, sorry Jef!

GUSHER ALERT!
Little cloudy ruby red to deep pinkish beer, irregular aery pink head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: metallic, hibiscus all right, floral, bit sourish. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: metallic start, little sourish, bitter touch, herbal, bit fruity, some orange marmalade. Aftertaste: bit funky, sourish, red berries, some overripe strawberries, jam, not sweet though, hibiscus notes, little bitter, bit lemony, more metallic notes. Meh. Complex, but don't really like all the different flavours.

Medium, slowly receding yellowish head over clear amber beer, apparently not very carbonated. Bit sharpish, toasted nose, quite spicy. Spices are very obvious, but not necessarily only piment. I get cinnamonbark, mace, and especially cedarwood, somehow peated. Again cedarwood, but now more typically chilli/piment. Toast again, caramel, quite a bit of peat too, tarry, even Islay malt. Strawberry syrup. Fierce alcoholheat, strengthened by the peating. Slick, viscous, well-bodied, not undercarbonated. Difficult to say precisely why, but something in here attracts me, and I find that a bit surprising; I suppose Lovecraft would now why...
