Description
Founded in 1784 by Jean Baptiste De Bruin and still a family brewery to this day; known as Brouwerij Schelfaut until 1919, when the name was changed to Brouwerij Bios by Paul Van Steenberge, who became the head of the operation in 1922. Currently operated by his great-grandson Jef Versele (since 1998). Underwent many technical upgrades and expansions since then, most notably in 2017 when new buildings were installed and production capacity was significantly increased.

(Bottle) Dark brown colour with hints of ruby. Creamy beige head. Malty, slightly roasted nose with notes of dark chocolate, dried fruit, prunes, coffee, brown sugar, ripe red apples and a touch of leather. Malty, slightly roasted taste with dark chocolate, prunes, coffee, dark cherries, tobacco, brown sugar and a mild spicy bitterness in a sweetish finish. Almost full body, quite sweet. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Tasty and quite well balanced for its 12%. Very nice.

In bocca l'aroma è quello di miele, frutta secca, pane tostato, agrumi, arancia rossa, mandarino, castagna, erbe aromatiche, frutta passita, rabarbaro, ciliegia e marsala.

Bottle in a pack from Lidl in Letchworth. Good pour and a really rich, quaffable and genuinely enjoyable beer. I didn't notice the alcohol and I'm disappointed I only have one.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ van Rooij, Culemborg.
Clear amber with a big off-white head. Caramel aroma. Sweet taste with a considerable chili component. Sweet finish with a burn. Standard boozy Belgian strong ale with a twist. I quite like it.

7 March 2025. At Beer in a Box Adventskalender 2024 Tasting. Cheers to the whole crew!

Not part of said tasting, but thrown in as a little extra. Caramel sauce, liquorice, bell peppers. Sweet caramel, biting chili pepper and bell pepper. Empty, hot, chili-fueled finish and warming vodka-like alcohol. Not the best encounter, but I might retry it if I can share with some friends.
