(330ml bottle from A la Biere Comme a la Biere, Paris) Pours black with a small lingering pale tan head and lace. Aroma dark malt, moderate roast coffee, liquorice, gingerbread, a bit of dark fruit, moderately sweet with muscavado sugar. Palate sweet at first, muscavado again, coffee, gingerbread, a hint of dates. Ginger becomes tangier in the middle on, sharp against a drying background of roast and noble hops. Finish is dry and almost chalky with lingering ginger and a leafy, slightly piney character to go with the roast. Medium full oily body with soft carbonation. Ginger adds a nice twist to the stout base though it’s one of those flavours that you become inured to quickly, so the first sips are the best and most striking in that regard.

On the odd side. Definitely some wildness. Light citrus and some fermented plum aroma. Pours hazy amber with good head. Tangy finish. Not a lot of balance here. Tap at Churchkey.

Bottle (assumedly quite fresh) drunk at Les Trois 8, 4/24/15
Light orange hued golden beer has a moderate, slowly receding white head. Clarity is very high, with little/no sediment left in the bottle.
Unusual aroma for a saison. Granted they do call it a saison orientale, on account of the lemongrass and ginger I believe. It’s not overly spicy, but yet, it’s not peppery, hoppy or really malty either. I guess biscuity malts, very light fruits (apple, melon, unripened strawberries) and some rather dull lemongrass. The beer is clean, however, with light minerals and just a touch of acidity.
Peppery and very dry up front, it progresses through light touches of white bread in to a finish of lemongrass that is impressively reserved. Would not confidently identify it blind. Carbonation is brisk but mostly tight, keeping it drinkable and light throughout. Lightly vegetal, but only on account of the adjuncts. Interesting, for sure, and well-brewed but again, nothing much here (some resemblance in the fruity esters) says Saison. My rating is more for a belgian golden.

Bottle sample at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Thanks kerenmk. Slightly hazy reddish amber. Aroma of caramel, toast, some chocolate, a bit of cardboard, mild smokiness and a fruity touch. Sweet flavor, pretty smoky, with caramel, a fruity touch, some toast, and a bitterish finish. Medium-bodied.

Copery color with a white head with good retention. Aroma has notes of citrus and some resins. Flavor has a decent bitterness, some floral notes, light caramel and hints of bittery orange peel. Bitterness in the final with good duration and dry mouthfeel.
