Pours viscosius black with a brown head. Nose is thick with cocoa, some toffee and dark-dark malts. Taste that follows keeps up with the same feel, very nice deep roast there, bitter milk chocolate and cocoa powder. Very good one, drinks above its 7.5%

Shared by KL at the Gifu Fest. A dull brass color with a nice hop bouquet. Medium bodied with a smooth texture and well balanced flavor. Really nice.

Tap at Gifu Beer Matsuri 2017. Spicy hop nose, citrus, some tropical fruits. Cloudy orange color with a low head. Great hop flavor, leafy, spicy, stone fruit, biscuity malt. Great. 8/4/8/4/15

Tap at Bungalow. Shonan Odawara Kiyomi Ale 25 IBU 5% ABV
A fruit golden ale that is a thin looking opaque fold with a dense head and an orange blossom bouquet to it. The taste is orange and fresh citrus without the pith, zest and just really light bodied and refreshing. Very seasonally appropriate, the kind of thing you’d order pitchers of if that wasn’t so insanely expensive in Japan. So much so, that virtually no one sells pitchers here.

Tap at Bungalow. The tan head of foam has a purple tint while the body is a deep inky black and has a savoury umami roasty aroma. Full bodied and luscious with good depth of flavor but the 7.5% and fullness don’t match the hot summer weather though.

Hazy, amber, medium head, passionfruit, pear, pommelo on the nose. Fruity palate, with light biscuity and crystal malts. decent stuff.

Tap at Watering Hole. Citrus, mango, some honey in the nose. Big nose. Pale gold, hazy, with lace. Great citrus hop flavor, peppery, some honey, mango oily, slick, with a great peppery, tingly finish. Awesome.

Pours nice clean yellow. Not much foam. Aroma has hops, sweet body and good fruity balance. Dribkability high and nice hop tingle there. Really well executed single hop, liking this a lot.

I’ve decided I will go to the Gifu Beer Festival in July and Shonan Beer will be there so I decided to celebrate my decision by cracking open: Shonan Barrel-Aged Wheat Wine 12.5% A deep amber brown with a wispy off-white head of foam that didn’t linger. The aroma is stone fruit, sweet malts, a bit of barrel and maybe even some funky cheese. Medium verging on full bodied with a raspy carbonic edge. The taste is oaky with sour cherries and stone fruits, whiskey and cherry cough syrup. Quite good, it makes me think of a maple syrup infused Flemish Red aged with berries in whiskey casks. Not at all what I was expecting but tasty. Thanks to my buddy for the hook up. I never saw this for sale anywhere in Kyoto. The more I drink it, the more it grows on me.
