Purchased at Archer Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on one of the hottest days of 2011 after taking a drug test...may as well celebrate with this one! Appearance a slightly cloudy dark amber with a frothy white head. Aroma of citrusy hops, a bit piney as well. The hoppiness in the aroma doesn’t really jump out at you. Taste has the standard bitterness of a traditional IPA with more of a malty/caramel/bready backing. The pine in the hops really comes out in the finish and it’s somewhat like drinking liquid pine cones. Not too bad, just a little too piney for my taste.

Bottle at Denver airport. Opaque black beer. Smooth soft stout. Just a hint of chocolate. Unusually crisp palate for a stout.

Tap at Freshcraft - lightly hazy dark amber - very sweet, with notes of caramel, candied fruits - hops are fairly earthy, woody, bitter...but they somehow do nothing to balance the sweetness - they come in on the tail end of the experience and add a bit of astringency - lightly estery - lingering wood and sticky malts - like an ersatz Bigfoot - disappointing after the awesomeness that was the Black IPA in this series.

Bottle shared by jcwattsrugger. Pours mahogany. Tan head. Nose/taste of caramel, honey, resin and hops. Taste also has a fake candi sugar feel that dominates at times - almost like a cheap barleywine. Thinnish body. Good beer, but could be better.
