Description
The entire idea of Oriel Beer went back in 2015 when we created the brand and started to make the building from scratch. Oriel Beer is a small family brewery, fully operated by ourselves, located in Bucharest, Romania. The name Oriel comes from the archangel of light, wisdom, illumination and sun. He is a patron of the arts and science for his ability to inspire and one of the seven archangels who preside over the world. He sparked our mind with ideas and we created this beautiful project. Since we are a very small brewery, our production capacity is very limited and we can produce around 200 hectoliters per year, but we aim to expand in short time.

DRAFT. Hazy amber-red, beige head. THE aroma has quite a bit of red wine / pomace / light vinegar notes, oak vanilla blending nicely in. The malts are getting lost behind. The taste is halfway beweet an basic dubbel with a bit of wine barrel footorints, tannic dryness. Yep, nice but not as spectacular as the Tripel. 3,7/5.

BOTTLE. Hazy red-brown, big beige head. The aroma has quite a few things going on apart from the usual suspects. There's the expected notes of dark fruit and dark crystal malts (though, not as strong as in the base beer), there's wine barrel - both woody and pomace notes, vanilla fruit cake, even notes of licorice candies - sort of like salmiakki. The taste follows, with those dark fruit / wine barrel notes, light sweetness, subtle spicy bitterness. Yep, the wine barrel certainly adds some interesting notes but also mutes the classic dark fruit / crystal sugar / spicy booze profile. Interesting, solid, though not a breakthrough success. 3,7/5.

BOTTLE. Opaque deep red-brown, huge frothy mocha head. The fruit (blackberry / raspberry) is pretty strong and dominant. Some spicy fruit seed funk. As the beer warms up you start to get some dark caramel and booze. The taste is thankfully less fruity. The usual dark sugar, dark fruit, fruit cake and spicy alcohol being spiced.. Errr.. Fruited up by the blackberries. Being rather subtle here, they do actually add a value to the base beer. The vanilla is not standing out in any way, but probably does make the flavour a little more round and mellow. It is a very smooth and rounded beer, and the fruit mostly does good, just wish it didn't smell that strong.

DRAFT. Lots of fruit and jam upfront, then it's the same good old Quad. As the temperature grows, the malts fight back.

Hazy amber, sparkling off-white head. Strong fruity aroma - dried apricots, raisins - some dark honey, followed by a good prick of spicy (and quite hot) alcohol. The flavour follows the aroma, albeit at half the intensity. The spicy alcohol and robust herbal hop bitterness finish the beer nicely. Obviously, not as luscious as the BA version, but a solid authentic Tripel it is.

Pours dark brown, small white head. Smell shows some rum, mild dried fruits. taste is thin, not as thick bodied nor intense as I had hoped. Rum is clear, but doesnt provide an overly boozy sensation, countering my fears. Pretty decent, but could use a more intense maltbase.

Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Smooth and somewhat airy palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Soft dark malts, a little dark malt cream. Mellow creamy dark chocolate with a near perfectly integrated soft Cappuccino coffee. Mellow fruity tones on the back end. Description says Pralines and I have to say I am persuaded. Soft finish. My second beer from Oriel and it's an impressive Impy, light and flavoursome. Definitely a brewery to watch.

Brandy-barrel aged tripel with lemongrass, an unusual idea concocted by Belgian HopSaSam and Romanian Oriel, tasted at Gents Bierfestival. Thick and frothy, papery lacing, egg-white, stable head on a misty orangey peach blonde beer. Aroma of ripe peach, banana, honey, sweetbread, pear, gin or indeed some kind of plum brandy (slivovitz), cloves and other vague spicy notes but not really lemongrass, at least not explicitly so. Sweet onset, banana, apricot and peach, light sourish note perhaps attributable to the lemongrass which otherwise largely fails to make an impression, medium fizz, supple and fluffy sweetbready and very lightly caramelly maltiness, light floral hop bitterness; spicy-phenolic effects in the finish, quite explicitly so and no doubt accentuated by the Romanian brandy factor, which also provides a clear brandy-like colour to the finish, as well as a lot of heat. Sweet tripel in its core, the brandy effect being clearly present and fitting in well, but I think this beer may improve and become more distinguished with a longer time in the barrel; as for the lemongrass, I hardly spotted it, so if the brewers think this ingredient works in this flavour composition, then next time I would recommend to add it a bit more generously. Somewhat underwhelming compared with HopSaSam's own and highly profiled creations here in Belgium, but still a fine beer nonetheless, certainly when seen from a Romanian point of view...

Transparant thick head over orangey-copperish clear beer. Quite spicy nose, dried herbs, but also pharmaceutical. Again a pharmaceutical touch, not unpleasant, maybe a tad paracetamol. Citrus, citrusrind. Medium bodied; feels light. Good carbonation. Pharmaceutical, rather than barrels...
