Description
The entire idea of Oriel Beer went back in 2015 when we created the brand and started to make the building from scratch. Oriel Beer is a small family brewery, fully operated by ourselves, located in Bucharest, Romania. The name Oriel comes from the archangel of light, wisdom, illumination and sun. He is a patron of the arts and science for his ability to inspire and one of the seven archangels who preside over the world. He sparked our mind with ideas and we created this beautiful project. Since we are a very small brewery, our production capacity is very limited and we can produce around 200 hectoliters per year, but we aim to expand in short time.

I have a 33 cl bottle of Oriel Oban Quadrupel acquired from a Dutch seller in a purchase made difficult by shipping. All's well that ends well. Tonight I will use my Teku glass for the sampling, seems to be right this go around. The bottle is attractive with its gray wax but not so much of it to make opening difficult. The view is a dark amber-brown liquid and essentially no head. I take a smell to get mostly a scotch booziness and a small bit of dark fruit. The taste is a bit out of the normal but we are dealing with scotch barrels here. Figs, peat, charred oak, scotch whiskey, dark bread, earth and leather. Very little carbonation results in a less than stellar mouthfeel. I call this a challenging beer at best but will gladly sample a quad in about any direction the brewery wants to go with it.

Bottle at Van Moll. Opaque black color, virtually no head. Aroma is malts, bourbon, boozy a bit, caramelized brown sugars. Flavor is malts, bourbon, boozy, lingering booze notes, sweetish and a bit hitter in the finish. Not too bad.

My 33 cl bottle was a difficult acquisition, a cooperative Dutch seller helped in getting the order delivered. This is the first wax-dipped bottle I have encountered in quite a while, looks upscale. This evening the glass of choice is the Trappistes Rochefort Belgian glass. Time to lift the cap, I smell ripe fruit, bread and booze. The appearance is a mahogany brown with little to no head. And now the taste. Raisins, a bit of chocolate, grain, a contribution from the scotch barrel, red plums, malt, yeast and caramel. The sensation is soft and smooth. I find this to be a subdued quadrupel with a nice inclusion of booziness. A good tasting.

Bottle, vintage 2021. Color: Very dark ruby, very thin beige head. Aroma: Malty, spicy, some dark dried fruit, subtle Bourbon. Taste: Spicy, rye, subtle dark dried fruit, toasted oak, boozy, Bourbon. A little peppery. Warming mouthfeel. Full body, just below average carbonation. A bit harsh but nice overall.

This Romanian brewery focuses on traditional Belgian styles. If that's your thing, you'll want to try them all. Very well done.

First dark saison I've had in ages. This is more roasted, less funky than expected. Loaded to the brim with malts and oat flakes. Dark. Just happened to have a Romanian book to "pair" with this beer. #worldlypleasures

Bottle at the flat in Sofia - picked up from 100 Beers online. Pours black-brown with a creamy, beige head. Medium sweet flavour with modest roast, raisins, a little earth, old wood, booze, berries, cocoa. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming finish, burnt sugars, toasted wood, dried berries, background cocoa. Quite nice. Fetching old wood and dark fruit character.

Bottle sourced from Beerdome and drunk at home - New 🇷🇴 brewery ✅ pours black with a nice beige head. Dark sweet and roasted malty with notes of rich chocolate, some treacle, lots of dark dried fruit, spices, smooth slick mouthfeel and full body, Armagnac soaked wooden accents into the lingering dark malty finish.
