About
The current castle Ter Dolen (De Dool) in Helchteren dates back to the 16th Century, but the estate’s history draws back much farther. In the Middle Ages, it served as summer residence, and later as refuge, for the abbots of the Abbey of Sint-Truiden. Its first recorded mention dates back to 1282. Throughout the centuries, the castle had a turbulent history. By 1977, the castle was uninhabited and started to decay. In 1993, Mieke Desplenter purchased the castle and its estate, and started a renovation project. A year later, the Ter Dolen brewery opened its doors with great acclaim.

In 1994, a hypermodern brewery was installed in the coach house of the medieval castle. The brewery comprises six stainless steel cilinder-conical yeast and lager tanks. The brew kettle has a capacity of 25 hectolitres per brew. Since 2013, the brewery disposes of its own bottling plant and a new warehouse with hothouse, so that the entire process from brew to bottle can now take place in-house.

Bottle, 7%. Good fruity aroma with a faint perfumy hop note. Hazy golden colour. Big stable white head. The flavour is very malty. Fresh grain and fresh baking yeast. Has a little warming alcohol to balance. Refreshing hop presence, grassy, perfumy, and slightly acidic. High carbonation. A modern, hoppy take on a golden ale. 737317 / 6 7 7 6 8,5

15/IV/25 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ holiday in France, BB: 2/VII/25, L24184 09:34 (2025-357)

Clear bright red beer, small creamy white head, a little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: bleh, smelly, weird, barnyard, cow stable, quite some sulphur, this is not good! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet and sugary, cherry flavoured candy, sulphur, cooked cabbages, dirty, bleh. Aftertaste: sugary, more chemical cherry aromas, soft acidity, slightly fruity, bah. Pretty damn bad.

Belgian tap beer unsurprisingly at Belgian Monk in Norwich with its noticeably church heavy city centre. Slightly pinkish-red with a light purple head. Easy strength with a fair amount of cherry available in both aroma and taste.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours an almost clear, reddish brown with a creamy and lacing, beige head. Nose has a little speculaas spices, but not too overpowering. Rich, sweet body with plenty of dark syrup and Xmas spices. No real bitterness. 190325
