Description
The last brewery in Hoegaarden, Tomsin, closed shop in 1957. Soon after, in 1965, the villagers decided to take action to preserve the original recipe. Milkman Pierre Celis decided to grasp the nettle and started brewing up a batch in his milk shed, using only a copper boiler. Because of the great success he quickly expanded his operation and moved into a bigger building – ‘De Kluis’ (The Vault) – a subtle nod to the monks. By 1985 the nod was no longer subtle as he was making more than 75.000 hectolitres per year. Just as he was about to start exporting to the United States, a large fire shattered his dreams (and the beer). The brewery was destroyed.

Since 1985, the brand has been part of Artois brewery, which provided fresh capital, after the fire. After the takeover, the recipe was changed to appeal to a wider audience and save on raw materials. The Artois brewery, which had already been absorbed into InBev (nowadays Aneuser-Busch InBev) for some time, decided in 2006 to close the brewery and move production to Jupille. On September 10, 2007, it was announced that Hoegaarden would once again be brewed in Hoegaarden. The brewery in Jupille didn't manage to imitate the typical taste of Hoegaarden...

(Bottle 25 cl) Hazy, orangey red with a small, pinkish head. Very intense and somewhat tart raspberry aroma. Light-bodied, rather sweet raspberry notes with an underlying acidity and a somewhat soapy, astringent feel. 180907

Test vom 22.9.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 11,5,4,4,10,4 - 5,15

Bottle at the Holiday Inn Express, Antwerp. Cloudy red/orange colour. Sweet pippy raspberry. Bit of tea on aroma. Just a little too sweet in the mouth. "that’s awesome," Mesandsim. Way too sweet. Artificial sweet fruit in mouth.

Test vom 12.9.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 11,11,11,9,9,10 - 10,20

Cloudy dark brown colour with quite a lot of sediment from the bottle. Spicy aroma with some yeast and malt. At first it’s sharp and spicy. Then some sweeter tones of caramel and malt come through. Finish is peppery and a bit dry.

0.33l bottle. Pale murk yellow bodywith relatively think foam. Strong aroma of banana, coriander and many other things...Flavor is nice very full, but again more like juice with beer. Some malt is present quite sweet. Palate is simply great, very long following the taste. Very good beer, but a bit too fruity for my taste.

Moderately strong and well balanced aroma of coriander, clove, and banana. Milky yellow color with a thick sudsy head. Clove and coriander flavor. Rather thin mouthfeel. Quiet and clean finish. This is quite good and well made. Note to AMC, it IS possible to mass produce a quality beer.
