Description
Established as the Matthews Brewing Co in 2005 by Stuart Matthews and Sue Appleby in a farm workshop estate in the village of Timsbury, a few miles outside Bath. Using the best ingredients such as Maris Otter malt , this small 5 barrel brewery soon became known for its distinctive, uncompromising ales.

Taken over by Dawkins Taverns and name changed in January 2010. The Brewery moved from Timsbury near Bath to Bristol in 2016.

Closed May 1st 2023 due to cost of living crisis.

From cask at Pembury Tavern. Pours dark brown to black with a huge tan head. Aroma is mild minerals and metallic. Dark roasted malty and breadish. Bitter and slight herbal. Ends dry and roasted.

From cask at Pembury Tavern. Pours hazy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is mild fruity, light phenolic and toasted malt. Bitter, light phenolic, mild fruity,vague apples note. Bitter dry finish.

Cask (gravity) @ The 18th Reading Beer and Cider Festival 2012, Reading, Berkshire England.Clear medium to dark red brown colour with a small to average, open and frothy - fizzy, fair lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, caramel, light yeasty, UK yeast, wood notes. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration, wood, caramel, dark malt, dark fruity - raisin. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20120504]

Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, chocolate, cacao, vanilla, dark chocolate. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light moderate bitter with a average to long duration. On gravity at the Looking Glass, Bristol 4/7/2013. Chestnut with a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, malt brew, with some berry fruits, earthy malts and decent, bitter finish with a hint of roastiness. Good.

On gravity at the Looking Glass, Bristol 4/7/2013. Near black with a slight, off-white head. Easy drinking stouts, with some milk chocolate, touch of dark fruits and porridge oats, before a toasty finish. Fine.

Cask-conditioned at the Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol 28/3/2013. Clear gold with a slight white head. Light, tropical fruit and sweet malt aroma. Easy drinking, with a touch of pineapple, cereals and decent, bitter finish. Good.

Cask-conditioned at the Green Man, Bristol 28/3/2013. Slightly hazy brown in colour with a hint of red and moderate, off-white head. Citrus hops, caramel, bready malts, some nuts and a gentle finish. Fine.
