Description
Monty’s Brewery is based just a short distance from the ancient castle town of Montgomery, on the Powys - Shropshire border. Monty’s Brewery was founded in 2008 by husband and wife team Russ and Pam Honeyman since then they have established the brewery as one of the leading breweries in Wales. Producing beers of many styles, with a focus on gluten free and low alcohol beers the brewery prides itself on its range having won many awards.

In this new world of sustainability and with a focus on the environment Monty’s is driving towards a more sustainable process. In the brewery we heat the water for each brew from the previous brew through plate heat exchangers, all helping to keep our carbon footprint down as much as we can. We don’t use any plastic in our packaging, and our waste grain, feeds local cattle, our first and last beer run-ins which would be a waste product are fed to a herd of Welsh Wagyu.

Cask ale, half-pint, shared with Finn at Lime Kiln. Ruby dark body, bubbly off-white head, clingy lacing. Bread and dried fruity nose. Blended taste of caramel malts, earth and dried fruits. Short malt-fruity ending. Fair enough. (Sunday pub crawl in Bristol 30.04.2017).

A golden beer, a head is medium and blond. Aroma has grain and some biscuits, hops with grass and citrus. Taste has grai, grass, nice bitterness but the citrus is disappeared, not totally dry but still enough. Unfortunately, taste is also slightly musty. Quite light bodied, but far away from watery. Not too refreshning and aromatic.

Gravity cask at 2017 CAMRA Winter Ales Festival, Norwich. Dark gold, flat with a thin, uneven film of white head. Fruited caramel, loquat, some TCP on the nose. Sweet taste with papaya pungency. Long medicinal sweet finish. Nice despite the messiness and worth a try if only for a small measure.

330ml bottle (1 of only 900 produced) at the Dec 2016 Shrewsbury Beer Exchange meeting in Chez Sophie, thanks to Mike for this new Welsh brew. Misty amber, wispy white head. Aroma had a cobweb like old smell to the malts, no hop esters either. The taste was grainy and semi-sweet, leading to a dry finish. Certainly not a Barley Wine, in my eyes anyway. Lacked depth and strength of flavour. I have no idea what an Umbarana Cask is, but I could find no unusual aromas or flavours in this experimental brew. I actually quite liked it, but I am not sure if the brew came out as the brewer expected?

A reddish beer, a head is medium and blond. Aroma has grain and biscuits, wood. Taste has grain, wood and some bread. Medium bodied, quite fluffy. Could be more fresh, but otherwise this beer knows own strenghts.
