Cask at Claret & Ale, Croydon. It pours pretty black with a hint of rub and a well - appointed tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, earthy, dull smoke, slightly meaty, umami, coffee and sweet plum The taste is smooth, bitter - sweet, cocoa, coffee grounds, slightly chewy, ash, toasted nut, plum and earth with a drying finish. Light - medium body and moderate carbonation. The aroma is pleasant, but the taste is a bit lacklustre. Not bad for style.

Cask at the Claret. It pours clear amber with a small off-white head. The aroma is brown bread, cereal, rivita, earth and toasted nut. The taste is bitter, grainy, toasted nut, earth, caramel, spicy, hay and wood with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Tastes a bit astringent after a while. A fairly basic bitter by any measure.

Gravity cask at the Rose & Crown, Sandhurst. A glossy black pour with a loose tan head; aroma of burnt sugar; rather thin in the mouth with a caramel taste and some raw sugar; then a long dry finish with cinder toffee, drinking chocolate and weak coffee. A good opener to the Haloween Beer Festival.

Handpull cask at the Earl of Beaconsfield, Cambridge. Reddish brown, translucent, with a reddish-tan head on top. Malt smell with a hint of resin. Some butterscotch in there as well which isn’t quite as welcome.tastes sweet enough but mostly nondescript. A bit of berry at the end. Hoppy bitter finish in the back of the tongue. I’m not all that keen but it’s drinkable.
