The wife is out with friends, so I’m having a random, weird beer tasting evening: first up an English brewed Witbier! This brown 330ml bottle (5%ABV) was best before 10 Mar 2011, drank and reviewed 28 Jan 2011. Poured into my Westmalle chalice. Good looks, pale orange, cloudy and headless after ten seconds, just like a regular Witbier. Strong clove aroma, with a bag of mixed spices thrown in too, impressive smell. I’m not a huge fan of this style, but this tastes and feels as good as the much loved Hoegaaarden in my eyes. It has that coriander/orangey edge to it as well, different and pleasing. A good start to my evening, hope the Armenian Lager is as good!

[Cask at the Bootlegger, High Wycombe] Very attractive deep ruby brown with a thick, creamy head. Rich, sweet treacley malt up front is perfectly balanced by a moderate woodland mulch bitterness at the finish. A really nice, comforting ale. Rebellion’s monthly specials are normally dull as ditchwater, but once a year they do one that stands head and shoulders above the rest - this must be the one for this year! Would suggest this is a brown ale rather than the bitter it’s been entered as, but guess it’s pretty irrelevant on a monthly special.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Copper with a tight beige head; malty aroma; soft with a malty flavour and a lasting, gently bitter, finish. Decent enough, but rather boring. Rebellion seemed to be trapped in the "must produce a new beer every month" mindset, rather than trying to make beers that are different or better.

Cask at Wetherspoons in Rickmansworth, Herts. A deep copper coloured pour with a medium off white head on top. Sweet, fruity aroma. Tastes of caramel, quite fruity, sweet, vaguely nutty. Not bad.

[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading] Brown with a moderate cream head and a good rich mouthfeel. Treacle up front follows through into a sweet, fruit taste with lemony hints. A woodland mulch bitterness at the end tries to balance but doesn’t quite achieve it, leaving a slightly sticky aftertaste. Far more interesting that most Rebellion ales - a good effort that for me didn’t quite work out.

[Cask at the William Robert Loosley (JDW), High Wycombe] Amber, thick creamy head. Leafy hops, toffee and a hint of lemon in the foretaste break down into a rather grubby, moderately bitter finish. Another half-arsed monthly "special" from Rebellion.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. Straw with a loose white head; light floral aroma; sweet and fresh tasting with a soft, persistant, hoppy bitterness; leaving a tangy grassy finish. Rather good, but not very seasonal - a touch of summer in the depths of December.

[Cask at the Bootlegger, High Wycombe] After last month’s superb monthly special (Decomposer), Rebellion return to their usual run-of-the-mill stuff this month. This one’s amber, with a slight white head, a pinch of fruitiness, a sprinkling of malt, a a dusty light bitterness in the finish, and a generous measure of boredom. Like so many Rebellion specials, it’s OK but dull. Yawn. c6
