500ml bottle: just in date when broached on 18th Jan 2016. Poured into a UK pint sleeve at home and consumed with a packet of Crisps. Clear, light golden body with a smooth foaming head of white bubbles. Hop nose and flavour with the malts in the background playing second fiddle. Decent enough beer but nothing to get excited about. Floral notes abound with not a lot of bitterness coming from the hop content, a semi-sweet session ale is my ’summing up’.

5th beer of an English tasting session with myself on 31st Dec 2015. 500ml bottle into a vase shaped pint glass. Light golden body with a full foam blanket of white bubbles on top. Another golden brew with a leaning towards citrus flavours: change the hops please. Score objectively, but fed up with this style of UK beer.

500ml bottle, into an Abbot Ale badged glass tankard at home on 5th Dec 2015. Deep ruby body, wispy to non-existent head in 30 seconds. Deep malty nose and taste with a light body depth, Mild like in nature and on a blind tasting that would have been my guess, even though the label claims it is ’ A smooth, dark, mild bitter’. I found more vanilla than biscuit in the flavour, again the label claims ’a biscuit aftertaste’ but it had no such thing according to my palate. Liked it though! Very pleasant, pity about the head.

500ml bottle drank at home on 13th Nov 2015. Poured into a UK pint sleeve and taken with a Ham & Salad Roll. Outside it is sunny, windy and cold (8 C). inside it’s warm (18 C) and calm. Clear light copper bodied with a full rocky white topping. Decent hop nose and taste, slightly bitter with a good malt underbelly. Clean feel to the palate and a little over carbonated for me, but I prefer my English Bitters on the ’flat side’ normally. Easy to drink and a no nonsense beer that showcases how traditional Bitter should look and taste like: even if they have used some American hops in the brew kettle!

Gravity cask at the Forest, Dorridge, winter beer festival 2015. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin broken bubbly white head. The aroma is skunky malt, light citrus hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a light, slightly watery, light resin, light citrus palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation.

500ml bottle poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 11th Sep 2015. Mahogany/Chestnut red hue to the brew, off-white head that stayed. Malty and nutty, woody nose, berry fruitiness also within the aroma. The taste followed the same lines: mid-roasted malts, tree bark, dry roasted peanuts and red berries combining within the flavour. OK, the red fruits take centre stage in the mouth, but the other stuff is there in the background. An interesting beer and I look forward to trying the other bottles from this brewery I bought alongside this beer.

Cask at Old Friends, Ulverston. Dark brown with a thick tan head. Coffee, tobacco and liquorice dominate the heady scent. Bittersweet taste with the sweetness winning out, coupled with a strange but tasty savoury note. Gravy? Hmmm. I’d like more from the palette. Very good by any standard.

Cask at Old Friends, Ulverston. Brown, very translucent with a khaki head. Chocolate malt, coal, forest fruits in the aroma. Sweet start to the taste, but a bitter/sour note takes over quickly. Very thin palette. I love a good mild, but this is only average really.

Gravity dispense on the Chris Fudge Memorial Special, 02/03/15. Clear orange golden with a decent off white head that retains well. Nose is citric peel, melon, bitter orange, straw, pale malt. Taste comprises melon, tangerine, orange pith, light grapefruit, straw. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light earthy hop bitterness. Ok easy drinker but more akin to a high boost golden blonde, lacks hops for an IPA.
