Established in 2016 in Elsdon, the heart of Northumberland. The First & Last is an award winning, family-run, microbrewery. We brew small batch cask-conditioned and bottled beer. Our beers are inspired by the wild, untamed landscape and starry skies of Northumberland.

Keg at 8th ISBF held at Hemsley House in Salford 18/11/2023. Pours hazed orange amber with a beige cap. Aroma: dried fruits, stewed plum, yeasty esters. Taste: light to moderate sweet & light bitter, plum, fruit esters, yeast, dried fruits. Medium body with average carbonation.

Cask at EBF Nov 23. Aroma has malts, grains, citrus. Clear dols. Frothy translucent white head recedes to the rim. Light-medium bitter. Citrusy sour edge. Underlying sugary streak. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Average-fizzy carbonation. Long dry slightly astringent finish.

GBBF Day 2. Cask. A light haze on the yellowish gold beer, small off white head. Smooth palate, light and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Good bright rich floral fruits. Soft sweet fruity spruce. Light dry finish. Very nice cask Saison.

Bottle online from Northumbrian Gifts, Ashington. Pours clear mid brown with a ruby tinge, white cap. Aroma: toast, caramel, hedgerow berries. Taste: light sweet & light to moderate bitter, caramel, honey, toasted malts, towards dry on the palate. Thin to medium body with light-ish carbonation.

Sample courtesy of Grumbo, cheers Graham! Black brown colour, small beige foam head and aroma of roast malt, chocolate, coffee, earthy. Taste is roasty malt, ashy, chocolate, coffee, dried fruit, with nutty earthy bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry roasted butter finish. Nicely drinkable.

Can from Hydrology. Pours clear golden with a thin white head. Aromas of light spice and melon rind. Taste adds floral notes and lemon zest. Clean finish.

Cask at GBBF'23, day two, 02/08/23. Lightly hazed golden with an off white cap that veers to a swirl. Nose is herb, yeast esters, lemon rind, straw, light spruce elements. Taste comprises yeast esters, barnyard notes, hedgerow, light white peppery spice, herb, grains, lemon rind. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close. Decent for a cask saison.

3/8/2023. Can from CentrAle, Newcastle. Pours very dark brown with a small frothy beige head. Aroma is ashy, earthy, chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruits, toffee. Moderate sweetness and medium roasted bitterness with a slight tart edge. Medium body, oily and creamy, bit above average carbonation. Fruity chocolate roasted finish with hints of the cooked beetroot maybe. Good beer. Bad war.
