Red amber ale with a thin white head. Light cherry malt aroma, faint and short, with more of a c-hop background. Sweet caramel malt in mouth, nutty notes, but not very Belgian....Russian River Beer Revival & Barbecue Cook-Off, August 20, 2005.

Thanks to Darkelf for this great barleywine. It has a pleasant combination of sweet malt, candy, and both bitter and fruity hops. Flavor reminds me of Old Boardhead, but not quite as good, and the dark brown, cloudy appearance makes it one of the best looking barleywines around. Crisp and a little sour; full flavored and full-bodied, a slow sipper. The sweet sugar is almost too much until the sourness shows itself and cuts down on the sugar.

I agree this beer is loaded with hops. But it has to be, otherwise you couldn’t taste them through the unpleasant overwhelming harsh alcohol heat. A poor effort from a good brewery.

Light brown colour. Aroma leads with woodsy American hops before proceeding to light bubblegum, floral esters and a light toffeeish malts. Soft, fairly light body. Nothing especially Belgian about this - it occupies a geographical No Man’s Land that befits Lagunitas’ innovative outlook. However, it’s rather restrained. I’d go so far as to say timid. It’s a decent product in terms of craftsmanship but lacks a sense of purpose. It’s defining element is not having a defining element and that’s not good.

Beautiful dark amber, red, mahogany color, with medium sized creamy head. Nice aroma, malt, caramel, fudge, light vanilla. Medium body strength; the mouthfeel is quite smooth; very moderate sweetness, nutty caramel flavor, a bit fruity; the bitterness is higher in the end, with also light oxidization. It’s not aging very well.

Hazy dark amber color, thin head, thin bubbles. Aroma of malt, apricot, vanilla, caramel, phenol. Malty, good structure, not too mellow, with a good hoppiness. The final (powerful) is balanced with good quantities of malt, caramel, hop; warming. Very good.
