Musty, tart aroma with notes of strawberry and grapes - pretty lisht for the style, with mild berry flavors dominating, a lot of hops and herbal qualities - seems like it doesn’t know whether it wants to be a barleywine or an IIPA - sometimes that works, but in this case it does not.

January 2005 draught at Redbones. Good engaging color, red/auburn tones mix with honey-orange and lighter shades of brown. Decent-sized light-beige head perched atop. Smells of caramelized brown sugar, lightly oily coffee. Some woodiness, or earthiness, can’t really place it, but it smells like strong German bock yeast (though I know it can’t be). Flavor is every bit as interesting, with a mix of bittersweet roast and chocolate, brown sugar notes, tart prunes and dates. Interestingly (to me), the alcohol comes through somewhat, cutting the sweetness and really playing with the malts. Nothing seems to dominate, there are no syrupy or cloying flavors here as well. Maybe I’m overly praising of this beer because I was expecting it to be boring and sweet, but I don’t know, it just really seemed to have a good complexity of flavors. Medium to medium-full body relative to the style, with moderate to low carbonation.

Thanks to Eyedrinkale for this trade! Pours with a huge frothy white head over a medium yellow, hazy brew. Very light malt and hop aroma. Lightly sweet flavor, but overall this lacks the complexity needed to fill it out. Light somewhat watery finish.

On tap @ Archer Ale House, Bellingham, WA

Golden dark-amber. Toasty aroma with a slight coffee note. Flavour of brown sugar and a little bit of toffee. Sweet and alcoholic finish. Not a style I’m into.

2004 bottle purchased at Julio’s in Westboro, MA. For good old pasteurised, heavily filtered Lagunitas, I will have to give some credit here. First of all, they knew what they wanted. They wanted to expand the market and send a good beer from west to east coast. That’s cool, and is impressive that they distribute out here in the weak Boston market. Anyways, they pay the price. It’s just a plain filtered golden ale. Hops in the nose recommend that you smell deeper, but it’s nothing heavy. Just some moderate hops, no dry hopping it seems. Anyways, it has good flavor, which is probably its best character. Medium body, good malt presence. Spicy, but not really bitter. Light caramel.
Rerate.
2006 bottle. ended up dumping it. Just blandly boring. Cheaply sweet, filtered maltiness is extremely uncomplex. Loose, forced carbonation and a boring c-hop aroma and flavor. Not attenuated enough either. Slight acid on the end.
More simple, bland crap for the palate-lacking from Lagunitas.

Cloudy golden with an orange hint at the center of my glass. Small head that disappears quickly. Smells of sweet malts. Very hoppy and kinda tasty. Grassy, hoppy, and bitter.

Sampled at MrFacto’s ’Tosa tasting, brought by JCapriotti. Brown (but not opaque), slightly hazy body, medium cream head. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, and roasted malts; nothing too unique. Flavor was quite light for a stout, with brown sugar, light chocolate notes, toast, and earthy bitter hops competing with the rather subdued coffee. More like a sweet porter than a stout. I didn’t feel the 7.9% ABV in the least! Fairly weak with a strange hoppiness.

Bottle Pours a clear dark copper color with a very thick long lasting light yellow tan head. Thick creamy lacing. Aroma is apples, plums, quite sweet. Tastes sweet and tart, figs, apples, brown "shugga". Citrusy hops. Bitter aftertaste but in a good way. Not a BW fan but this is nice. The ABV is noticeable but feels right. Nice "mistake"

2004 bottle served in a lager glass at about 45 degrees. Pale gold color, small bubbles rising, with a small white head. Very clear. White grapes in the nose, with plenty of bitter, rusty smelling hops. Minerals and wet moss, with a light amount of pils malt in the background. Flavor is crisp right away, with a decent amount of yeastiness, light notes of honey, green pears and some faint citrus. Medium body, finish is quite crisp, though has some muddled sweet/sour notes; slight traces of syrupy alcohol mixed with malt residue. Strange, but the beer is still quite refreshing.
