Description
The New Old Lompoc opened on May 6th, 2000. But the Old Lompoc Brewery (as it was formerly know) has been producing handcrafted ales and lagers since December 1996, while the tavern has been open since 1993.

The name originally came from the movie ‘The Bank Dick’ starring W.C. Fields and Mae West. Most of the movie took place in the ‘Old Lompoc House’, which was the local watering hole as well as a boarding house.

Our food menu is an excellent array of Northwest pub fare with a great selection of entrees, soups and salads. We have also remodeled the patio and added a sun deck.

First - yes, I checked many times straong, not strong. Draft. mahogony color with a nice off-white head. Low roasty, slight hop, slight smoke aroma. Balanaced smoke, malt, roast, fruity hops. Lingering fruit, smoke, and malt. Medium body. Nice balance. Well made beer.

Draught at Horse Brass Tavern. Nice malty aroma. Dark brown with white head. Malty flavour with a bit of toast and a balanced hop finish. A very worthy example of a dunkel I wish they bottled it.

Well if there’s one brewery that has a remarkable house character in every aspect, it’s certainly this one. The clarity is always deeply hazy; transluscent. Head is full and almost creamy, off-white in color and receding slowly to cover, leaving large rings of lace in its wake. Body is a glowing ruby-grapefruit with warm orange, tangerine and light auburn hues.
Hops are forefront in the nose and are heavily leafy, bitter and citric. No malt sweetness lingering on the end. A touch of breadiness and some peachy-like fruitiness, probably from the yeast, but also a bit of grainy, almost tannic malt character. But, invariably, you’re dragged back to the heavy dose of dry, bitter hops. Medium to medium-high strength of aroma, though some blandness is inevitable from all of the yeast in suspension. Slight aspirin character, touch of sourness. Needs more hop aromatics and less bitterness. No alcohol noted.
Signature attenuation in the body, Lompoc being some of the more dry beers I’ve tasted. But the dryness becomes rather unsettling, as the malt is just nowhere to be found. Grainy/cracker-like character provides no sweetness, no real support to the heavy IBUs. All of the yeast in supsension does help add a more "full" mouthfeel, but there’s a big difference between the slippery, fatty acid mouthfeel of yeast and the supple, comfort of malt sweetness. Carbonation is moderate, actually quite tight. But in the end it’s just death by hop bitterness. Dry grapefruit in countless permuations (oranges, red grapefruit, lemons, white grapefruit, etc...) but it’s still just hard, bitter citrus, in the end. Light caramel breadiness emerges with warming, with a touch of actual sweetness, but by then, the palate is too fatigued.

Draught pint at Redbones on 11/15/06. Listed as "Harvestman Alt" but I’m betting there’s a good chance that that was just a misinterpretation of "Harvest moon Ale". Regardless, I’m not creating a new entry.
Heavily cloudy amber-copper colored body has an off-white head that is dense, moderately well-retained and laces the glass in rings. Plentiful carbonation rises.
Hoppy, spicy nose is supremely dry, with perfume, light soap and a crunchy/earthy note from the malt. Extremely, extremely attenuated, you can tell from the nose, lending no sweetness, or perhaps, just a pinch of light toffee. Seems like some rye or other spicy/nutty grain was used, though that could very well be the hops. Medium strength of aroma, but the yeast presence in their beers always dulls it.
Hops range from lightly citric, to spicy, to perfume-like and slightly floral. They collect all over the palate, lightly juicy, but with a ton of bitterness that goes overboard (for me anyways). Some soapiness on the finish, with astringent, slick, toasted malt that is all but 100% attenuated. Maybe a bit of toffee and pale malt sugar slips in, but it’s fleeting. Heavily bitter finish, very fatiguing. The highly yeasted texture is somewhat of a comfort, giving that slick, yet substantial feel. But it’s hollow, there just isnt any malt definition and the hops are 95% bitterness.

Draught at restaurant. Dark orange with tan head. Not reminiscent of porters I’m used to. Hoppy aroma. Creamy body with much hoppiness. This is really more like a winter ale than a porter. It’s a good winter ale.

On tap at New/Old Lompoc on NW 23rd Avenue, Portland. Hazy copper colour, lasting off white head. Sweet sherbert hop aroma. Rose petal fruit in mouth. Malt is ok. But is then overtaken by this huge mix of sherberty sweet hop. Not astringent nor overly bitter, but just extreme sherbert. Some grapefruit. Finish starts as beer begins. Just way too hoppy. Nice rose petal and grapefruit though.

On tap at New Old Lompoc, NW Portland. Hazy copper with off white head. Creamy IPA. Creamy in mouth, lots of hop. Smooth hop aroma, smooth, creamy in mouth, hoppy on end. Just a bit artificial on the malts. Great hop, rest of it is not good.

On tap at New Old Lompoc, NW Portland. Amber/red with beige head. Good amber beer, nice hops, slightly nitro feel. Bit stripped, fruity malt, berry fruits. Hop, just a bit artificial. I thought an ale didn’t have hops? This is a nitro amber surely?

On tap at New Old Lompoc NW Portland. Copper, lasting off white head. Bit of floral hop, bit of sherberty hop. Bit creamy. Bit of caramel. Wouldn’t say it’s a pale ale. Bit of green apple.
