Description
Goose Island Beer Company began as a single brewpub opened in 1988 by John Hall. By 1995, John’s beer had become so popular that he decided to open a larger brewery, along with a bottling plant to keep up with demand. 1999 brought even more growth, along with an additional brewpub, and today, what was once one man’s pint-filled dream has become the Goose Island empire you know and love.

in 2011, Goose Island Beer Company was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Since then, we’ve continued to brew beer that we’re proud of and now we get to share these beers with our friends both nationwide and internationally.

Almost black beer, no head. Aroma of toffee, caramel, strong dark malt, chocolate. Taste of massive bourbon, toffee, vanilla, sweet chocolate, creamy mouthfeel. Very good.

bottle from kihoskh
pitch dark, small film brown head.
Aroma is berries, roasted malts. the red and blue berries are quite noticeable in the aroma. also dark chocolate. in fact not far from dark chocolate with berries.
flavor is dark chocolate with berries, roasted malts, dark toffee, the fruity part of the flavor is a bit artificial, like, candised berries, fruit flavor with sweetener added, not natural stuff, palate is super smooth and things are well balanced, just tastes a bit forced or a bit like using artificial flavoring.
apart from that, an excellent very smooth fruit-imperial stout. the end is nicely roasted malty bitter, making the beer go down very well.
Bottle from 2015 and tasted feb 2026 - the bottle has aged exceptionally well and there are no hints whatsoever of oxidation or flavors that have faded. Tastes like it was fresh, but have an exceptional rounding and blendedness to it. Good stuff. Wish I had tasted it 7 years ago when it was fresh for perspective, i doubt it was better back then though.

Bottle to snifter. Pours pitch black with a thin, lasting beige head. Aroma is oaky, bourbon and chocolate. Taste is similar and boozy. Thick texture, a few steps below chewy. Pretty great overall, one of the only good brews out out by AB.

Bottle shared with SVD. Good stout but due to all the hype I expected it to be better

Poured from a 500 ml bottle.
Aroma is malt forward with lots of roast and dark chocolate notes. Lots of dark caramel and toffee notes. Lighter toasted bread and burnt sugar notes. Some dark fruit, cola and a hint of soy. Moderate bourbon and faint oak notes. Medium light alcohol notes. Light rye spice.
Pours jet black with a small, thick, dark mocha head that recedes quickly to the edges and disappears. No lacing and long sheets of alcohol.
Flavor is rather sweet with lots of dark chocolate, layers of caramel and toffee. Medium light roast notes. Lighter dark fruit notes of prune and raisin. A bit of burnt sugar. Medium bitterness and moderately high alcohol notes. Moderate bourbon notes and light oak notes. Light rye spice.
Mouthfeel is full bodied and slightly sticky with light carbonation. Low astringency and moderate alcohol warmth.
Overall, a solid stout. Lots of bourbon rye notes. Lots of malt complexity, surprisingly not a lot of hot alcohol notes. A good BCBS but not an overly amazing one.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle.
Aroma is malt forward with lots of toffee, caramel, toasted bread and hints of chocolate. Light tamarind and chile notes. Medium light bourbon and alcohol notes. Some hints of burnt sugar and oak.
Pours a dark brown with lighter brown hues on the edges and hints of auburn. Faint, thin, tan head that recedes quickly and disappears.
Flavor is fairly sweet with lots of caramel and toffee. Lighter notes of toasted bread and burnt sugar with some hints of chocolate. Light raisin and dark fruit notes. Medium bitterness and medium alcohol warmth. Light tamarind and chile flavors. Some spicy heat that lingers in the finish. Hints of lime and acidity. Light bourbon and faint oak notes.
Mouthfeel is full bodied and a bit stick with light carbonation. Low astringency and moderate alcohol warmth.
Overall, an alright barley wine. The base barley wine and bourbon notes are nice. The tamarind works well and I don't dislike the chile and the heat from them. The lime and the acidity it adds is a bit odd and unnecessary.

bottle in nice round cardboard tube with description of the bourbon and beer. Black with a film head. pours rather thick, looks good, the head is very small but still looks good.
aroma is heavy on the bourbon with strong chocolate notes, some licorice, velvety. some dark caramel, faint wood. very heavy aroma but not boozy or stingy. like it has settled well. fainter dark fruity notes (but not like a quad, not the yeasty stuff)
Flavor is heavy bourbon, licorice, faint coconut, aromatic wood, roasted malts, faint salt licorice, dark chocolate, faint peppery note, very faint cedar woody like oxidation like note - but it's not in the way, adds character. super soft texture and flavor, really heavy but at the same time very well blended and rounded. i think they had this one on wood as long as it could handle, and the result is very very good. definetly a level up compared to the normal bourbon county stout. refined, exclusive, distinct. pretty awesome.
nowadays people stuff all sorts of things in the stouts. this one is just the imp stout and the barrel - still a lot more complex than all the artificially flavored ones.
