Draft @ Thirsty Moose, Portsmouth, NH. Deep unclear, dirty amber in color with thick white head. Taste of roasted grain, and a very light Amarillo hops, with the rye being noticed near the finish. I don’t get spiciness. However, I get lots of roasted grain and caramel malt. A nice creamy mouthfeel that makes it easy to drink. Solid session beer.

22 oz. bottle from the Brewery. Peanut husk after a freshly cracked nut. The mouthfeel is a little thin yet , I will give it points on the unique factor. Coco powder, big time peanuts with a lot of peanut skins. This could be improved with some oat meal flakes for thickness. Needs more roasted barley.My biggest compliant is the body. Really needs more body. But as I sip it it kind of really grows on me. The peanut is a major influence no what.

4 oz. taster @ the brewery on 23 Feb 2013. Dark brown color with tiny pieces of beets floating around in the liquid. Smells a lot like cooked beets and chocolate. Taste is like stout added to red beet juice. I love this brewery but this one just didn’t really do it for me. The vegetables in my stout was just really bizarre. Yet the woman at Throwback get a few points for creativity.

Throwback Cran-Ginger. Sampled at EBF. Pours a hazy pink/peach with some white head. Nose of spice and ginger. Flavor is 100% ginger and 100% cranberry. Great ginger beer.

64 oz. growler that sat a week in my fridge before sharing with friends. Dark brown pour with spotty white lace down my English pint glass. Nose is light mint on top of chocolate malt. Texture is chalky. Chocolate malt is silky and smooth. Mint is a subtle nuance. Pretty straight forward. Nice stout.

32 oz. “Growlette” from the brewery poured yesterday at 3 pm. English pint shows deep brown with small ring of head. Nose is a tantalizing chocolate, roasted grain and chocolate. Oatmeal gives a nice chewy, medium body. Grain is at the forefront of the flavors with oatmeal and light chocolate near the end of the sip. Well made stout.

4 oz. taster at the brewery. Gold color with light retention in the taster. Nose is light grain and weak hops. Flavor is grain, corn husk and light hoppy presence in the back end. Lightly grassy. Finish is clean and crisp. Lighter bodied, as expected, with a decent level of carbonation. Follow the right path for the style.

22 oz. bottle purchased at Village Market, Hampton Falls. Deep brown color in my pint glass. Very thin beige head that left light lace. Smoke on the nose for sure! Flavors of coca powder, chocolate, mild traces of toffee and smoke throughout the sip. Mild lingering smoke after the sip. Soft level of carbonation with a Medium body. I have to admit, smoked is NOT something I drink often. Not a style I normally enjoy. But Throwback has one here that I can share with a friend and not be put off.

Bottle thanks to PhatDog1. Pours black with tan head. Nose is mostly peanuts - shells and all- and organic peanut butter with some cocoa, roasted chocolate and toasted black malt. Body is on the lighter side of medium for the style. Dry roasted peanut finish. Nose and taste is over 90% peanut. The most peanut forward beer I’ve ever had. Overall, I really enjoyed drinking this beer. If the body were a little thicker and the roasted chocolate malts were more pronounced this would be a real winner. That said, while I only rated this a 3.6, I’d rather drink it than a lot of imperials that I’ve rated a 3.8/3.9, so I definitely recommend this.

Bottle. Maple syrup and chocolate wheat malt aroma. Dark brown with moderate head. Lightly sweet maple syrup and chocolate malt flavor. Very tasty.
