Blonde brewed with wheat and pale malt intended as a thirst quencher and seeking connection with the rich tradition of cycling in Belgium - which many beers have done long before (think of Flandrien by Louwaege in the nineties, and so on). Apparently bottom fermented - that is at least what the back label states - but with the addition of wheat, it can never be a true Pilsener, can it? Medium thick, off-white, cobweb-lacing, regular, moussey head over a crystal clear, yellow-golden robe with disparate sparkling, turning misty and deeper old gold further on. Aroma of freshly baked white bread or fresh white bread dough, unsugared bubblegum, green banana, white soap, wet cigarette paper, halfripe pear, natural rubber, dried field flowers, raw potatoes, touch of industrial honey. Sweetish onset, quite fruity for a lager, with notes of green pear, unripe banana and a dash of oxidized green apple; sourish undertone, accentuated by lively, yet - for the category intended here - not overly harsh. Some minerality underlies a smooth pale malty middle, white-bread-doughy with clear wheat slickness, sourishness and even soapiness that is as strong as the pale barley malt is, but also reinforcing this rather annoying aspect of bubblegum a bit. Herbal and floral hops develop in the finish, providing a somewhat lasting but altogether mild bitterness, along with retronasal accents of chamomile tea and garden weeds. This dim, underlying sourishness remains till the very end; in all, the sweetness I was fearing based on orthonasal observation remains relatively restrained, fortunately. Some bready-yeasty touches here and there too. More balanced than I was expecting, but the bubblegummy aspect (though fading in the end) and that 'whiny' sourishness all the way through bother me a bit. In terms of style: clearly this is again one of those contemporary Belgian blondes trying to get as close to Pilsener as they can, a seemingly growing phenomenon now that the 'big wave' of more exuberant craft beers has been declining for several years, but if you go through the trouble of bottom fermentation, then why add wheat to the malt bill and why not filter it entirely, so that, perhaps and with some more extensive cold lagering, a truly fine German style lager (Helles or Pilsener) may have emerged? This seems to get stuck somewhere halfway, making it difficult to classify (not Broeder Jacob's problem I assume) and thus difficult to judge. Apart from that, fairly drinkable, but with some annoying aspects here and there...

Bottle, 8.5%. Clean grain aroma, wheat chaff and yeast. Hazy golden colour. Big stable white head. The flavour is yeasty and wheaty with a citric finish. It is of course not a German wheat beer, but it reminds me a lot of heller Weizenbock. Some acid and fresh yeast in the aftertaste. Smooth and flavorful. 737317 / 6 7 7 6 8,5

Pours darker, unclear amber. Small stable white head. Scent is sweaty, distant whiff of malts. Full, but not overly loud, or pleasant. Taste is salty, very mineral, under a exhausting 'sweetness' (though the beer isnt too sweet) . unfresh idea's come to mind (sweat) . Pretty sharp at the same time due to the 'salty' like aspect. Sounds pretty bad but the beer in itself - though not great - isn't that BAD, due to it not being overly expressive.
