Bottle. Waitrose. 5.5%. Instant new contender for best supermarket beer available. Not far off black. Beautiful tan swede. Nose is all charred citrus and bitter earthy ashy well done granary bread malts. Taste has a bitter chocolate sweetness and a good dose of charred grapefruit bitterness. Silky and full on the palate, to the tune of a nitro beer. Lingering moderate bitterness to finish. Holy shit.

Bottle. Kernel advent box day 4. 5.4%. Mostly clear very deep reddy brown. Swede is thick and rocky. Not as dense as some but it stays the course admirably. Nose has fruity cocoa notes. Granary loaf. Light grapefruit-esque hop. Taste is semi sweet with a light earthy roasty bitterness. Beautiful silky mouthfeel with pitch perfect fizz. Fruity chocolate to finish. What a fantastic brown ale.

Bottle. Kernel advent box day 3. Colour of Lucozade. Soft haze. No head. Nose has cherry stone and stalk. Bit of a mixed fermentation soapy yeasty thing. Some cherry flesh. Taste has a little sweetness it is mostly dry and fairly tart. Some acidity on the palate. Dryish on the palate with low carbonation. Tart dry finish. Ok. Too tart and acidic though.

Bottle. Kernel advent box day 2. Deep red copper. Suds of lasting mucky beige. Not particularly a looker. Nose has loads of the red wine barrel coming across sweet juicy and lightly tangy. Some malt character behind. Taste is semi sweet and fruity with a red wine tang. Easy drinking and vinous. Juicy finish. It’s a lovely easy drinking bev but there’s no way I’d know this was supposed to be an Altbier. The red wine barrel dominates everything.

Bottle. A gift from Totnes. The person not the place. Deep cola brown. Nice swirly beige foam. Good sweet and semi savoury smoke here. Bit of a bonfire toffee thing, in fact. Fruit and nut. Light vinous edge. Taste is semi sweet with a tang of fruit. Possibly a tad thin overall but with a tangy smoky finish it’s got sank double sharp.

Bottle. A gift from Totnes. The person not the place. He’s a fine fellow. This is wank though. Smells of butter and wet paper. Taste is pretty rank. Dry and slightly sour. Thin and dry overall. Yeah. Wank. Imagine selling shit like this and hoping you’ll get away with it.

Can picked up at the brewery. Clear very dark chestnut brown. Slim sticky beige finish. Nose has earthy milky coffee. Light roast. Bit of burnt toast. Taste is semi sweet with a dry and earthy bitterness. Drinks well under the 7% as per most Thornbridge bevs. Earthy bitterness to finish. Good gear. Could fancy it more on cask though probably.

Bottle picked up at a shop in Cologne. Hazed light straw colour. Decent white foam stays the course. Nose has oak and soft brett. Lemon and lime peel and zest. Hint of vanilla. Taste is dry and lightly bitter. Crisp bright light mouthfeel with fine foamy carbonation. Lean bitter finish. Super drinkable.
