Not as much a fan of this one as I was back in the day. Sampled on draft this beer poured an orange-amber color with a medium sized yellow-white head. The aroma was flora, piney and fruity hops. The flavor was floral and fruity hops with light malt underneath. The floral and fruity hops linger.

Bottle. 2006 brew. Nice big head with good duration. Color is amber. Aroma is nice and hoppy with some spices. Taste is hoppy with some sweetness. Bitter hoppy finish.

Bottle. Pour is almost black, with brown highlights. Decent size tan head with an aggressive pour. Aroma is nice, roast malt. Taste is more of the roasted malt with a nice hop in the body and towards the end.

2013 Vintage 12 oz bottle purchased as a single at Cork and Barrel South in Lawrence, Kansas. 2335207:23 (2012, November 30, bottling line 2, 7:23 am) and 2335207:24 (2012, November 30, bottling line 2, 7:24 am) stamped on either side of the neck of the bottle. The pour is a lightly hazed amber copper brown with a one inch light tan head that is lasting. Nice lace left behind on the glass. The aroma is round caramel and fruit sweet malt, along with orange citrus and pine hops, the nose is fresh, clean and alive. In the back there is some straw and a bit of dry floral present. The taste is the orange, citrus floral hops and the sweet and fruit malt in nice balance. There is a brief touch of heat in the finish. The integration of the beer is wonderful, all the flavors play together beautifully. The palate is medium bodied, soft natural carbonation, and lingering caramel and mineral, than warming alcohol. The straw and dry floral reappear in the aftertaste. Always a favorite. 7,4,9,4,17 (4.1).
2002 Vintage 12 oz bottle purchased in January of 2008 at Bottleworks in Seattle, Washington. Pour is mostly clear, mahogany with a 3/4 inch off white head. The head retreated to reveal some nice lacing. Aroma is really big and beautiful - big caramel, scotch maltiness. Some nice orange and fig fruit notes as well. Only in the very end is there any indication of oxidation. Taste is the caramel, scotch maltiness. The fruit sweetness is also present but pretty faint. Oxidation (cardboard) is introduced in the finish. Does not detract too much from the flavor. Solid full body is very mouth coating and satisfying. This held up really nice. 8,4,7,5,16 (4.0).
2008 Vintage. 12 oz bottle shared by KAggie97, 9th bottle sampled at the 1/28 Houston Tasting. Pour is orange-ruby with no head, only thin of-white bubbles ringing the rim of the glass. Aroma of fresh hops, piney and resinous. Also features a nice caramel biscuit malt in the nose. A wonderful smelling beer. Taste is great, like a really well developed version of the Sierra Nevada Fresh Hop Harvest Ale. Great big pine resin hops and a beautiful malt backbone. This is a really great beer - certainly tastes much more like a DIPA than a Barley Wine, but who cares, this beer is delicious. 9,4,9,4,18 (4.4) - I’ll use this rating.
2007 Vintage. Pour is deep reddish amber with some gold as well. Big off white head from an aggressive pour stuck around until the very end. Taste is big malt, with good hop balance as well. The alcohol had a presence, but nothing overwhelming. Well done barley wine, though age would improve this. 7,4,8,4,15 (3.8)

24 oz. bottle. From the wine frig. Delightful floral hop aroma. Never really noticed that before. Suggestion: serve this at British ale temperatures. It’s backed by some malt notes. Bright amber color with a decent white head that succeeds in lacing a trifle. Medium mouthfeel, starts with something floral, and then a lot of malt pops up. Then some hop arrives, and then the malt comes back. Not exceptionally bitter in the finish. A little maltier than I enjoy, but that bouquet at each sip is just fantastic. As time goes on, little citric nuances arrive. The finish is sort of barley coating the mouth with hop coating the tongue. I could go on.

2006 Bottle: Pours a deep mahogany color with a medium off-white head that has decent retention. Stringy lacing. The aroma is hoppy and nutty. Medium-bodied with a straightforward flavor of nuts, hops and malt. The finish is moderately bitter and short. This beer is like the majority produced by Sierra Nevada, well-made if not earth-shattering in any way.

Grassy aroma backed by hop. Light golden color with a huge white head that laces as it goes. Starts a bit fruity. Medium mouthfeel. Nice balancing bitter. Finishes floral and fruity. Dry. Nice hop finish. It seems like it could be an ale. No higher praise.

Bottled (thanks to either Degarth or Stoutlover72, I forgot whom I got this from...). I managed to break the neck of the bottle by mistake while digging in my beer cellar... Hazy orange golden colour with mediumsized white head, with some yeast still on the bottom of the bottle. Aroma is sweet malts, US flowery hops, some fresh oranges and slight alcoholic notes. Flavour is fruity and flowery hoppy, grassy, oranges and also some slightly yeasty notes also. Quite nectary and hopped aftertaste. I wouldn’t recognize this a pale bock if I had to try it as a "blind rating".

The heralded west coast Sierra Nevada. Lets try the porter. Short stubby 12 oz bottle, only cost me $1 at the Vintage Beer in Boardman Ohio. It says, this porter is entirely handmade! When you pour it into a glass, it seems a little thicker than your typical beer. Little aroma, but what aroma it does have it comes across somewhat fruity and roasty. The initial flavor is the same, somewhat fruity and roasty. Has a dark beer impact without a tremendous amount of lingering bitterness. Nice and impressive. Not a bad porter. This is a little better than I expected from Sierra. Very enjoyable. The back of the throat bitterness builds a little after each drink. Finally the finish has a little lasting personality but it is not in your face. Overall a good representation of a porter, would purchase again, especially at this price. Not bad for a west coast brew. East End Pink Clouds and Yuengling Black & Tan is better tasting than this. However, this is a little better than most of the porters I’ve had the pleasure of tasting.
