Another bleh. This is a relatively poor example of the style, IMO. It looks like a stout on the pour, with a very deep red body and thin tan head. Aroma is decent enough, with hops and roasted, almost burnt malts entering the airways. However, I am not a fan of the thin body and weak flavor. Roasted malts and some chocolate are there, but there is a strange caramely sweetness and too much emphasis on the hops. I'll put it this way: the blend does not work, at least for a stout. Now their porter is something else...

Another wheat, refreshing on a warm night. Golden, slightly cloudy body with light sediment. Thin white head quickly dissipates. Aroma is lightly hoppy. I found this wheat to be a bit on the tangy side, with a nice hint of lemon, but otherwise unspectacular. A refreshing choice if there are no better alternatives.

Very light golden in colour with a nice pale white head, but dissolved quickly. The smell is somewhat refreshing...very light and fruity. The taste is actually very strong, especially for a lager. There is a strong barley presence and a pretty good hop flavour. I don't find it too refreshing, but its not a bad beer. The aftertaste is almost a bit overwhelming and strong (in a bitter sense), but its worth trying.

Summertime, the weather's easy...so the brewers at Sierra Nevada decided to kick back and pony up "Summerfest," a light, rather bland lager that would be good if it was 75 cents/bottle. But I digress. Its straw-colored body is accented by a beautiful, rich, creamy, succulent, perfect head of thin white bubbles. The flavor is almost overwhelming: it is best to try this 2 ounces at a time. OK. In reality, this is a bland, boring brew. I'll stick to the summer wheats instead.

A pleasant pale ale. Crisp and hoppy, yet not as complex as standouts in the style (see Three Floyds Alpha King or Founders Pale Ale). A good option when faced with a wall of Budweiser or Miller products.

Beautiful hazy copper color; creamy head. Aroma of earthy hops, dusty, white sugar, white pepper, puke. Medium body, dry caramel flavor, quite good hopping level and quality, a bit grassy. Dry finish, quite long. Good but without soul.

A portly, pugnacious porter by the folks from Sierra Nevada. How dare I wax poetic on this succulent succubus swill. Sip after sip, roasted mouthful after mouthful...ok. I'm done. A solid porter, somewhat watery, but a good beer nonetheless. Nothing remarkable, although this one is smoother than most porters. Worth a try.

This is a good beer, don't get me wrong, but I fail to discern how this is much different from an IPA. In fact, this beer has very similar taste and feel to the brewer's Celebration Ale, which I prefer over this brew, which must be its mutant cousin. I prefer my barleywines a bit less hoppy than this one. The hops tend to cover much of the flavor...perhaps aging does this one well.

OK, I love hops and all, but does Seirra Nevada have to put so many into ALL of their beers, regardless of style? The hop character is great in their pale ale and celebration ale, but it ruined the stout for me, and it pretty much ruins this one for me, too. It has a fruity, almost vinous aroma, with hints of alcohol. The flavor has some malty, sticky sweetness, with some fruity esters, but the hops kick the crap out them, steal their lunch money, and force them to hide in the background. I think this will be great with some age, if the hop character mellows out, but my young sample isn't all that great. [re-rate, original: 3.4] Alright, after some consideration, and several additional tasting, I must appraciate this beer for what it is, and not penalize it for what it is not. I am quite the hop head, and this has hops out the wazoo, and it has enough malt to satisfy the malt lover as well, so it is really the best of both worlds. I need to pick up SEVERAL more six packs, some for drinking, some for aging, because I know this will be great for years to come.
