Thanks to heemer77 for this one! Well I could easily survive on this if I were stuck in Iowa. Nice light gold color that comes with a head of fine white foam. Good clean hop aroma. The flavor is well balanced malt and hops with a slightly chalky finish that was the only detractor and it wasn’t intense enough to disqualify this one. Good APA and better than many IPA’s I’ve had.

This beer came in my beer club. I have never heard of this brewer before. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark red-bronze color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is sweet and has a strong spicy hop element. The body is moderately thick The flavor is nutty with a strong spicy hop flavor and a hint of caramel. The hops coat the tongue and linger on the palate. This beer surprised me, and I found myself rather fond of it. Now only if it was normally available here...

2004 bottle compliments of Heemer77. Thanks for this bottle, it’s very cool to try a belgian beer from Iowa. Served in a tulip at about 50 degrees. Pours from the bottle a glowing yellow mess of beer, bubbles and sparse white head. A light-test proves this to be just ever so slightly hazed, but this is still the first half of the bottle. The last half would prove to contain a touch more yeast sediment, creating a mildly hazy honey-yellow with some tinges of light gold. Taking in the aroma, there is a touch of white pepper, lightly bitter hops and just a shade of bubblegum. Diving in, the beer opens up fairly dry, with touches of clove and coriander, a very relaxed (perhaps too relaxed) malt profile. Lightly bitter hops are evident from the start. As the beer progresses and finishes, there is more bubblegum, extra-light touches of pils malt and light spice. Finishes, unfortunately, on a bitter and mildly metallic note. Medium body does not disappoint, this isn’t any lighter than some classic belgian styles. But the malt could use a kick and add some much needed strength. Bitter hops detract, I don’t particularly enjoy tasting hops bitterness in a wit. I can appreciate the lack of any syrupy sugariness and yet the simultaneous lack of any major astringency problems. Spicy, hoppy and dry, with less yeast and malt apparency, much less, than I would ask from a witbier. I think this is a difficult and underappreciated syle which has been somewhat lost in the cheap mass-market imitations and the many poor attempts by (American) microbreweries to reproduce them, with some exception. This however, seems to cut a middle path. Neither too poorly made, nor anything elaborate. There, you got my two cents free of charge.

Brought to MrFacto’s ’Tosa tasting by 1FastSTi. Pisswater clear golden body, thin off-white head. Adjuncty, tangy, soapy aroma. Sweet, honey-like flavor with light fruit, biscuit, and adjuncts; very light and quite uninteresting overall. A bit buttery. Thin.

2004 bottle compliments of MilkmanDan. Deep red color, clear and filtered, no head. Toffee aroma, coppery and yeasty. Starts out very sour and yeasty, light caramel. Medium and made with a good amount of water but yet not ridiculously thin. Some light sweetness on the end. Surprisingly pretty good and reminiscent of an alt with all of the yeast copper and sweetness in the middle. It works as a marzen though it’s a sweet version of one, with not as much graininess. Didnt find much in the way of spicy hops.

Acquired via trade. Pours a clear golden orange color with a miniscule white head that was gone in no time. No lacing. The aroma is lightly wheaty with a glimmer of hops. Light-bodied and crisp, with a subdued yeast, spice and wheat flavor. Very little aftertaste aside from a touch of wheat and malt. Not big in the flavor department, but fairly drinkable overall.

Acquired via trade. Pours a very dark brown color that lets a little light through. Thin beige head that dissipated rapidly. Not much lacing until further down the glass. The aroma consists mainly of coffee as well as a touch of malt. Medium-bodied with a milky texture. Roasted coffee, malt and a touch of tart fruit in the flavor. The finish is smooth with a lightly bitter character. Nothing too exciting going on here, just a run-of-the-mill Oatmeal Stout you can find anywhere.

Acquired via trade. This beer pours a bright amber/orange color with a thin light beige head that dissipated over the course of a couple minutes. Thin lacing. The aroma is vaguely malty with some bread as well. Medium-bodied and a very clean and crisp mouthfeel. Light malt, caramel and hops flavors. Not abundantly flavorful overall but it is very drinkable. The finish is lightly sweet malt with a touch of spice and hops. All in all a pleasing beer to drink despite (because of?) the simple approach.

Acquired via trade. This Bock pours a dark brown color with a medium light tan head. Thin and spidery lacing. The aroma is lightly malty with chocolate undertones. Medium-bodied and very sweet with chocolate malt, caramel and nut flavors. Some smoke can be detected at times too. The finish is lightly sweet and not very interesting or flavorful but luckily it doesn’t detract too much from the experience. All in all a fair Bock.

Acquired via trade. The beer is a dark copper/amber color with a thin beige head that dissipated rather quickly. Very thin lacing. Lightly malty aroma, with a hint of nuts. Medium-bodied with a flavor somewhere between a Marzen and a regular Amber. There is a tartness under the malt and caramel that made the character seem a little off. However it was still fairly easy to drink. The finish is alternatingly fruity and malty. Overall not an exceptional beer but it is smooth with a nice taste.
