Description
The City of Cambridge Brewery was founded in 1997 and specialises in selling premium bottled and draught beers. It was the first independent brewery to open in Cambridge after an absence of 25 years. Originally based in Cheddars Lane Cambridge, in 2001 it expanded into larger premises at Chittering.
We use inspiration from the beautiful City of Cambridge to name our products, which are available on draught at selected local pubs and also in bottles for you to take home and enjoy.
Brewing ceased in the second half of 2007 with brewing being contracted out to a.o. The Wolf Brewery and Oxfordshire Ales. By 2010 brewing was all taking place at Elgood & Sons Ltd. In Autumn 2011 the brewery was taken over by Wolf and all brewing takes place there. In 2011 the business partnered with WBC (Norfolk) to brew and bottle our beers to expand capacity to meet the growing demand for the iconic brands.

Bottle. (at papsoe’s pre-festival tasting) Golden-orange body, almost clear, with a small, white head. Caramel, malt and some hops in the aroma. A bit regular, but it’s not bad for a Christmas beer. Pleasant bitterness in the flavor to fill in with the malt and caramel. Medium to full body, and a finish that is mostly hopped, leaving the malt in the background. Pleasant and quaffable. (070510)

Picked up from the ’Little Beer Shop’, Ludlow, Salop, 10-03-07 Poured a very dark brown colour, coffee and nut’s in the aroma. Beer tasted very good, nice chocolatey taste, came across as being slightly weaker than the ABV suggested but most enjoyable. Its nutty, malty and there are mollassess on the nose, touch of roastedness also. Taste is more of the same with a nicely bitter edge, touch of dark fruit and more roastyness in the mouth, really good and better than I remember last time. A7 A5 F7 P4 Ov14 3.7

500ml bottle from Bacchanalia, Cambridge. Deep ruby with disappearing beige head. Choccy porter, nice choc malt. Bit thin in mouth, intensity and some dark fruit sourness comes in later. Really quite a nice choccy porter. Bit watery in mouth.

Bottled. Slightly unclear golden beer with sediments and a small white head. Sour aroma, probably wild yeast, with fruity and floral notes behind. Some bitter orange too. The flavor is fruity, acidic and citric, with a stinging bitterness in the end. Too thin and watery. It is still 6 months to BBE-date, maybe the brewery have a problem with the sanitation, cause this beer probably shouldn’t be sour. Other than that, it is a well-tasting and refreshing beer. (060806)

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, London 22 Apr 2006) Golden amber colour. Nose is fruity and hoppy with hints of orange and mandarin. Taste is fruity (citrus), starts sweet but ends in a drier rather hoppy finish. Refreshing and easy to drink, but somewhat on the thin side.

Orange-amber clear beer; small yellowish head, slightly irregular. Rather sourish nose, as pickled fruits, and then dry hops and some faraway malts kick in. Surprising fresh flowery hops taste - makes me think of cask Landlord. Flavour of - bananaflower?, dried corianderleaf and faint spruce. Delicate and nice, light sourish touch intertwining with the hopbitter and a suspicion of maltsweet. Light and dry. It’s very light for a Christmas ale, but admittedly, perfect for a bottled best bitter. Can’t help but liking this a lot - thanks, MatW.
