Description
Flying Dog Brewery is a craft brewery located in Frederick, Maryland. It was founded in 1990 as a brewpub in Aspen, Colarado by George Stranahan and Richard McIntyre. Demand for Flying Dog beers quickly grew beyond the brewpub's capacity. In 1994, the company opened a 30-barrel brewery (Broadway Brewing Company) in Denver. Looking to expand again in 2006, Flying Dog purchased Frederick Brewing Company in Frederick, Maryland and began producing beer in both Maryland and Colorado. In December 2007, Flying Dog announced that it was closing the Denver brewery and would solely produce beer in its Frederick facility.

Pours a deep ruby with medium tan head. Has an aroma of sweet malts and caramel. Very sweet overall. Flavor is also sweet with chocolate and caramel tones. Hops are not evident in this brew as they are overrun by the malts. Mouth is slightly thick. Pretty good brew over all.

Brown color. Malty aroma; some malt and a lot of caramel taste, nice aromatic hopping hidden behind the roasted malt. Too dry.

Bottle from Utobeer. Dark ruby colouor with thin beige head. Bit of dark treacle, bit of boiled sweet. Hoppy finish. Some dark malts choc/coffee run throughout. A good English style ESB. Hey I thought of that all by myself and then I come to add it and look at the style and it is down as an English Strong Ale. After 1390 beers, I am finally starting to get the hang of this tasting beers business.

Bottle from Utobeer. In terms of labels, I think this brewery wins. Attractive red/copper colour with beige head. Warm spice, malt, hop aroma. Tangerine fruit. Good dry malt. Good balance. Flavours are quite understated. Fine if not overly special. Bizarrely a flavour on the finish reminded me of cucumber. Don’t know why. 3.2/5.0 Re-rate, bottle from Utobeer. Amber, lasting beige head. Lovely aroma of classic grapefruit PNW hops, piney resinous hop. After a long day with too much rain and cycling, this was perfect supping beer. Decent earthy malts and then this very good piney resiny hop. Nice balance, needs more malt maybe. Good pale ale mind.

Pours dark with a small tan head that diminishes to a ring around the glass rather quickly. Aroma is of roasted malts, caramel, chocolate, alcohol and also kind of sweet. Flavor is rich, has notes of caramel, coffee, and roasted malts with the alcohol becoming noticeable in the finish. Mouth is creamy and coating. Definitly a good brew.

Dark brown translucent pour with no head to speak of. Aroma of malts with almost a sweet syrupy odor. The flavor was malty and I detected very little hop — sweet fruits, a bit of caramel, prune. The finish presented a slight tartness and a hint of bitterness. Thin to medium body and comfortable palate.

Pours a very dark brown or black with a small brown head. this Porter goes down very smooth. Plus you get the art work on the lable.

12 oz. bottle, no date stamp. Thought I’d better break into my cellar for one, since reading about how some of them have been gushing. Luckily my bottle seems okay. Pours with a big brown head, though there does to be a bit of bacterial smell above the bitter coffee aroma. As the head thins out, it leave a thick lace in the glass. Deep black body in the glass. Texture is thick and maybe a tad harsh. But the taste is big and throaty to match. Coffee and chicory malts, or maybe I can describe it as Kahlua like. Roasties this time don’t overwhelm the big American hop load. Some stout sourness. I’m glad to find out this batch will probably stay all right and stand up to some cellaring.

Bottled. Nice caramel color with a bouquet of hop upon pouring. A big tan APA head billows up top. Tangy and piney hops in the first impression, nestled in a pillow of toasty malts. Strong Northwestern hop profile, but one that finishes nice and clean. Leaves the lips pretty sticky. A sturdy, drinkable example of this style.
