Description
Flying Dog Brewery is a craft brewery located in Frederick, Maryland. It was founded in 1990 as a brewpub in Aspen, Colarado by George Stranahan and Richard McIntyre. Demand for Flying Dog beers quickly grew beyond the brewpub's capacity. In 1994, the company opened a 30-barrel brewery (Broadway Brewing Company) in Denver. Looking to expand again in 2006, Flying Dog purchased Frederick Brewing Company in Frederick, Maryland and began producing beer in both Maryland and Colorado. In December 2007, Flying Dog announced that it was closing the Denver brewery and would solely produce beer in its Frederick facility.

Pour is a complete black with a large tan head. Aroma is roasty, smoky and malty. Flavor is coffee and dark chocolate wih a liquid smoke aspect. Finish is very thick and rich and the alcohol is hidden well. Overall this is prob a standard porter and nothing to make it impy except the alcohol. It has it qualities but nothing to put it in the top of it catagory.

Deep dark porter with a creamy brown head, lacing. Pleasant aroma of figs, molasse, floral hops, vanilla and licorice. In mouth, rich pungeant chocolate, with burned caramel, smooth but long bitterness, funkey. This is quite a noice tribute to the Doc. Bought at Knightly Liquors, Orlando, 7.99$ for 4 pack.

2005 bottle from FlacoAlto, definitely one of the most generous traders out there. Consumed on 1/5/06. Popping the cork releases a strange mix of aromas. Cheese, DMS, strawberries, butter, mold, sweat, rich honey and sticky, lightly sour caramel. Hmmmm. Fortunately, allowing the beer to breath quickly delivers me from these odd notes and I get a more directed clove, caramel and light wheat aroma. The beer begins a clear, auburn-strawberry color with some light rust notes and an absolute mountain of fluffy, slightly off-white head that is slow to recede, but ultimately does recede to a ring with little to no lacing. By the end of the bottle, the beer does pour cloudy, with light sediment left on the bottom. Seems to be bottle conditioned, which the texture also confirms. I think the texture is one of its strong points. Fairly tight carbonation, though the bubbles are a bit large on the palate, translating in to a soft and effervescent, but not very creamy mouthfeel (if that makes any sense). The flavor is surprisingly (for this brewer) malty, with plenty of caramel, blackberries, plums, plum skins, black pepper and clove. Light cherries and mashed dates, with a hint of vanilla creaminess and plenty of residual sugar on the finish. The aroma eventually settles out to produce mainly a clove note, a little bit too simple, with just light cola and caramel notes. The flavor is quite full though and the yeast quite true to style. What it does lack, is a mastery of the malted wheat that you see in the German breweries. Here it is a little too husky/grainy, whereas some of the greats from Germany are profoundly creamy and seemless. Bits of banana finish, with well concealed alcohol, but probably a bit too much on the fruitiness. Too much plums, strawberries, black berry skins that dry the flavor out a bit much and get a little too dominant. Still, well done to style especially for an American brewer. If they could just work on that aroma and get some retention on the head.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Beautiful, clear amber with a small, white head. Incredibly lovely aroma hops in the nose with the Chinook really shining through. Rather light body with vague notes of caramel malt. But completely dominated by the great hops, that also leave an immense bitterness. 291205

A nice reddish amber ale with a thin tan head. Some bitterness, but not as much as I expected for a pale ale. Quite drinkable, I will finish this bottle after I complete the rating with a shrimp cocktail.
