Description

I just gotta say: i love those belgians! Clear golden color, with a lot of small particles floating around. Aroma is triple-like spicy, cheesy. Sweet and spicy taste, champagne yeasty and apple notes. Only slightly alcoholic palate, but hardly noticeable, and who cares after finally being back to the real beers!

Virtually no head; hazy foxy-amber beer. Alcoholic nose, brandy ( a good one! ). Definitely some oxidation in the nose, beer however well below BBd. Sweet taste - and immediately alcoholic. Again brandy-ish finish, sweet, but absolutely not cloying. Caramel flavour. Thick, oily mouthfeel, viscous, alcohol-burn but not overwhelming. There's really not much to rave about the finish. A very strong ale, a good ale. But Dogfish Head, Victory or Pizza Port do better eyes closed. Not to mention De Dolle Brouwers or the Reverend Fathers Trappistes.

Gushing to overflowing broken-white head, champenoise-like, but much more stable than any natural sparkling wine. Orange beer with champenoise pearling. Nose of alcohol, brandy-ish. Very outspoken nose of light-brown sugar 'cassonade', some liquorice. Also a hint of old pine-wood. Bitter taste - not hoppy, but spicey, as orange peel or kumquat. Retronasal more beery taste, even a hint of hops - and lots of liquorice. Very dry - mission accomplished. But the pale-brown sugar taste ruins quite a bit. Alcohol-burn and peppery. I've ambiguous feelings about this one. It is a really new beer. I think it is a very good example of typical Belgian brewing. But they might have stopped before the liquorice and cassonade...

Hazy, honeyish colour. Very thick white head, rather regular. Going down lacey. Liqueurish nose, herbal, grassy hops, candi sugar, whiff of ureum. Taste is exaggerated liquorice. Some caramel malt and even burnt malt, despite the colour. Agressive, unhoppy bitterness, at odds with the nose. Yeasty too. Retronasal I seem to detect some coriandre, but faint - no other spices. Dry, very much so. Alcohol at last. Slick mouthfeel. Quite bland, less impressive than most of their beers. But not really undeserving. Could do with a nice hoppy boot in the backside.

The beer made me think about the "Kastelein 8°" beer immediately. It isn't the same. Kastelein is actually weaker, and the taste is completely different (we were able to taste them next to each other). Very deep-dark; thick head, immediately down. Very hoppy! Good! Noble hops, some chocolate in the nose. Taste: Belgian? this is pure USA West-coast. Toffee, good dark malt underbuild, with a superb dose of noble hops. There is some oxidation, showing the age of the beer. Full-bodied, creamy mouthfeel. The palate is actually somewhat lacking, as if the beer gets tired. Americans! This is your Belgian ale - the most West-coast tasting beer I've ever had here. And I like it.

Draught. This beer is brewed by De Landtsheer to be a draught housebeer for various pubs in Belgium. pale brown coulour with orange hue. Slight white head, lacy. Nutty nose, candi sugar. Bitter-refreshing taste, it's hoppy. Candi-sugar is there, in the background. Reasonably full-bodied. Bitter aftertaste, but not hoppy, more burnt malt. A rather OK brown. It's better than I seem to recall.
