Went to check Hanatouro in Arashiyama today and brought along this Aussie brew: Sailor’s Grave Law of the Tongue Smokey Oyster Stout 5.8% Deep black with a rusty tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, chocolate and some bright tangy lime. The oysters come through in a certain minerality of the ultra smooth soft textured beer. I barely get smoke except in the finish merges into cacao. Smooth beer.

Can. Red with a large beige head. Aroma of toffee, buns, blood oranges and a little pine. Happily on the dry side with firm bitterness. Toffee and blood orange give way to some pine and spices at the end. Not totally my sort of thing but the balance is expertly done.

Sailors Grave Into the Pines Forest Ale 5.4% Brewed with pine and foraged Slippery Jack mushrooms. It’s a pretty russet brown with deep beige foam that vanished fairly fast. The aroma was very malty and earthy sweet caramel. The medium to full body is smooth and tastes like the aroma with an earthy nutty mild caramel fudge flavor. Very well balanced.

Can. Very dark brown with a tan head that soon retreats to the rim. Somewhat earthy aroma with the promised chocolate, vanilla and cherry in that order. Just about medium bodied. Not all that sweet overall and the cherries are nudging up on sour. A little roast and a little bitterness vie with the cherries to provide a pleasant balance. Thoughtfully done.

Medium golden color. Frothy white head. Passionfruit, guava and grassy nose. Medium aggressive bitterness with slightly odd perfumy fruit character in the mouth that I didnt particularly care for. Nonetheless, well balanced and enjoyable.

The sun is shining in Kyoto so I felt why not go for a gose! Sailors Grave Crystal Healing 4.8% Gose with crystal Apple cucumber Matte dull copper color, it has a bit so appetizing butterscotch aroma. The taste is refreshing tart apple and cucumber. Quite summery but not beer like. OK.

Can. Dark brown with a tan head that doesn't last too long. Aroma of plums, mocha, singed/ smoky dark sugars. Moody with fruit then smoke then bread before a dry and drying, woody, slightly bitter finish. It's very them to keep this at 5.2% and let you go to it but it would be interesting to try an it comes to you version at ~8%. But it's the usual thoughtful, intriguing stuff with a sense of place.

Pale gold. Form a can. Medium head. Light hops in the nose, grains. Rather sweet and grainy flavor, bit of popcorn and vanilla. Decent but does not really make much of a statement.

Sailors Grave Sou’ Easy Draught 4.8% Very pale straw gold with a soft somewhat subdued aroma. Medium bodied with a sweet graininess and perhaps even vanilla notes in the finish. Not so complex, this a 6-pack/fridge filler type brew.
