Description
1st Republic Brewing Company (1st RBC) is Veteran owned and operated by Shawn Trout and Mike Drake. Both Mike and Shawn served our great country on active duty, as well as, the Vermont Army National Guard. Both served with distinction overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Shawn was stationed in Colorado Springs and deployed with both the 2nd and 4th Infantry Division’s and after his second tour overseas to Afghanistan he decided it was time to come home. Mike served with the 3rd ACR and then deployed with VT’s TF Saber with the 2BCT/28ID (PA NG). Mike was on the hiring committee of a local military contractor that helped bring Shawn back to VT. They became great friends and today are expanding their business.

Appearance is as shown in the picture.
Aroma: roasty malty to black coffee-ish tones with a slight sweet oaty/oatmeal note further underneath; super light nutty to dark chocolatey accent further down in there
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a sweet to roasty to slightly bitter sort of way; finishes about the same way with some dryness
Texture: medium bodied; sessionable; great smoothness; good carb level
Overall: good oatmeal stout I would be willing to partake in again.

Can to snifter.
Appearance is as shown in the picture.
Aroma: caramel/toffee malts up front with some bitter dry leafy/earthy to floral hoppy notes; slight cherry wood with a super light apple sweetness underneath that then subtle tobacco tones
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a variety of different sweet features with a substantial bittering dry rolling malty quality; finishes somewhat sticky with a dry bitterness and earthy-ish note
Texture: medium bodied; good as a sipper; some smoothness but definitely fairly dry; good carb level
Overall: I can see this as a Strong Ale, whether an American one or an English one, maybe that's up for debate. I'd return to this either way.

Can to becher glass.
Appearance: gold hazy burnt orange color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: stiff piney to slight passion fruity sweet toned hops (not the tart side of the passion fruit and that never shows up); clean bready malts
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a very sweet sort of quality initially then seems to open up to a fair bittersweet with more warmth; finishes mostly sweet
Texture: light to medium bodied; somewhat sessionable; some smoothness; slight dryness nicking the tongue here and there; carb level seems fine
Overall: maybe not one of their top offerings and not a top offering for the style but it "somewhat works"-ish.

Growlette brought home and poured into a nonic glass.
Appearance: dark brown close to black color with a finger and a half's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: slight notes of black coffee with some dark malts, keen roastiness; light notes of dark chocolate; ever so slight note of ash
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a dry sweet to roasty quality with a light bitterness coming in and out; finishes dry, sweet and roasty
Texture: light to medium bodied - maybe a touch closer to medium; some sessionability; some smoothness with the expected dryness coming back; good carb level
Overall: pretty nicely done no frills sort of stout for the most part. Don't ask me why they retired this, all it needed was that "ashy" scent taken out of the aroma for this to be a stellar one.
