Description
Charlottesville’s original brewery located one block off the downtown mall.
Welcome to the rebirth of Charlottesville’s longest-running brewery and pub! South Street Brewery was purchased in 2014 by Blue Mountain Brewery, whose owners have a deep connection with this storied brewing establishment. Two of Blue
Mountain’s founders—Mandi and Taylor Smack—both worked for South Street over a decade ago, Taylor having been the brewer from late 2001 until early 2007. Our company is
committed to maintaining and revitalizing this important Charlottesville landmark and gathering place.
We hope you enjoy our expanded beer offerings, including venerated South Street originals that helped shape the Central Virginia beer scene, as well as new beers reflecting the diversity and experimentation that is the heart of American craft brewing.

Admin Note: Originally established in 1998, South Street Brewery was purchased by Blue Mountain Brewery owners Taylor and Mandi Smack in 2014. Taylor Smack brewed at South Street Brewery for 5 years before founding Blue Mountain.

On tap at the brewery 3-9-07. Pours thick and BLACK, small head, with hints of a deep red around the edges. Aromas of chocolate malts, vanilla, sweet alcohol, raisins, and caramel. Lovely sweet chocolate-covered-cherry like liquor, without being sickly sweet. Hints of vanilla and oak, definite bourbon taste- without being too strong or pronounced. Outstanding beer. Too bad it’s not a part of their regular rotation.

On tap at the brewery. Pours medium brown/amber with an inch of head. Smells malty, with tinges of copper and other metals, as well as alcohol. Flavor is dominated by strong alcohol. I didn’t see the abv of this, but I’d have to guess it’s between 8-9%. Lots of bitter malts in there as well.

On tap at the brewery 3/27/06. Pours black with no head. Looks thickish. Light aroma of burnt coffee and licorice. Flavor is much the same... burnt coffee, licorice, and some grassiness. Not a tasty beer.

On tap at the brewery. Deep brown with a dusting of a head. Aromas of brown, nutty malts, hint of smoke, and some metals. Flavor is pretty much the same, with a hint of a smoky sweetness. OK and slightly interesting, but nothing that really stands out.

Draft. Regular gold in color, no head, looks slightly flat. Aroma is slightly sweet, slightly wheaty. Flavor is drinkably sweet, but ordinarily plain, with a slightly sweet tinge in the wheatiness.

Draft, of course. Pours a lightish amber with a small off-white head. Malty aroma, some sweet fruits, some hops, and malts. Flavor is overall kinda blandish, but not bad. Has the same sweet fruits- but not too sweet- and a ricey/malty finish. Made me long for Thai food after tasting it- I think it was the finish.

On tap at the brewery 1-18-06. Deep reddish brown with a small tan head. Malty aroma- slightly nutty, slightly metallic... Flavor is of a red ale, mixed a bit with a brown, and having a hint of alcohol there. Slightly sweet, but it doesn’t linger. Decent.

Cask. Cloudy amber brown with a small head. Sweet hoppy aroma- smells like cascades! Decent amount of citrus in the nose. Flavor is sweet, hoppy, and smooth, with some sweet grapefruit (rather than being bitter). Ends only slightly bitter and has a tiny tinge of alcohol. Very nice.

Cloudy pale yellow with a small head. Not much of a smell... hell, flavor either. Very bitter finish, with not much else there. Boring, and not really a good example of the style.

Draft at the brewery. Sweet scent... slightly malty, slightly coffee... very refreshing. Flavor is dry, slightly bitter, slightly sweet, slightly dark fruitiness. Tasty! Finished coffeelike.
