GBBF Day 3. Keg. Free pour as the keg was misbehaving. Opaque dark brown beer, big fluffy pale tan head. Airy semi dry palate, low carbonation. Smooth mellow dark malts, modest dark chocolate. Soft floral spices. Little dark fruits. Smooth finish. Fine. The spices are flavoursome and not overdone.

Draught @ GBBF 2019, [ Great British Beer Festival 2019 ], London Olympia, Hammersmith Road, London, Greater London, England W14 8UX.

[ As La Pirata Nadala ].
ABV: 8.8%. Clear dark red brown colour with a huge, creamy - frothy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, wood, oak, leather - funk, grape. Flavor is moderate to light heavy sweet with a long duration, funk, leather, dark malt, dusty, wood. IMO: think it is off - but works when cold. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20190809]

Apple, pear, spicy, fruit esters, bit funky. Starts medium sweet, tangy and lightly sour and turns dry and bitter, but not too dry after all.

330ml bottle. Opaque, darkest brown colour with small, thick, creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Intense malty aroma, BA and cereal malty notes, lots of caramel, dark, if not burnt caramel, Bourbon, toffee, a touch of oak and vanilla, some Brandy, a touch of resin, diffuse coffee interludes; a part of the caramel carries some honey-like sweetness. Taste is sweet-ish, minimally dry, malty, notes of caramel, caramelled cereals, dark and burnt caramel, toffee, Bourbon, a touch of oak, weak vanilla overtones, some honey-like sweetness adds cautious floral and fruity aspects. Oily to viscous texture, soft, sticky if not tacky palate. Very intense, extremely malty, condensed toffee. Quite complex, bonus points for intensity.

On tap at doerak in Delft. I'm very torn with this one... I love la pirata yet this is a bit of a difficult beer. Pours black with a fine sheet of head. Aroma is spot on, dark malts, melasses, caramel, whisky. Some grape and green apple which stands out. Flavour is very mixed. Good malt base, nice sweetness, with caramel, molasses, some roastiness. Just the green apple... it does stand out, even if it gets better as it warms up. The finish on the other hand is outstanding, the whisky balances the malt flavours perfectly. A difficult beer and not one of la pirata's best. Neither bad nor outstanding, just a bit odd. Indeed a shame about the green apple. Better when warm but still odd. Edit: at room temperature the green apple almost disappears and this is a lovely beer. Still some green apple, but no longer intrusive. Upgrade from 3.5 to 3.8.
